Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

The following morning brought a bitter, gray rain that lashed against the hospital windows. With Ryan locked in a county holding cell on charges of illegal medical theft and reckless endangerment of an infant, Emma and Laura were left completely exposed.

At 10:00 a.m., a knock on Room 412 broke the silence.

The door opened to reveal a man Emma had never seen before. He wore a damp wool overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed back, carrying a worn leather briefcase that looked as old as Emma was. He had kind, sorrowful hazel eyes that seemed to take in the entire room’s exhaustion in a single glance.

"Laura," the man said, his voice a deep, resonant baritone that filled the sterile room with an unexpected warmth.

Laura’s eyes widened, her hand automatically tightening around the bedsheets. "David? What... what are you doing here? It’s been ten years."

David Vance stepped into the room, closing the door softly behind him. He looked at Emma, a soft, respectful smile touching his lips. "You must be Emma. Your father, Thomas, was my closest friend before he passed away. I was the executor of his estate before Ryan Collins convinced your mother to revoke my administrative access."

Emma stood up, her defensive instincts instantly flaring. "Why are you here now?"

"I’m here because a friend of mine in the district attorney's office flagged a domestic arrest report containing the name Collins," David said, walking over to the bedside and placing his briefcase on the table. "Laura, when you married Ryan three years ago, I told you that his financial portfolio was a fabrication. You didn't want to hear it then because you were grieving Thomas, and Ryan offered a quick escape from the pain."

He pulled a thick, blue legal folder from his briefcase. "Ryan didn't just steal the life insurance money, Laura. He used a forged power of attorney—one he had you sign while you were heavily medicated during your first knee surgery two years ago—to place a secondary lien on this girl’s future educational trust."

Emma felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "My college money?"

"Every dollar your father left for you, Emma," David said, his face hardening into an expression of absolute, protective fury. "He funneled it through a shell company called Apex Logistics. He was planning to declare personal bankruptcy the moment the baby was born, leaving Laura with the debt while he walked away with the clean cash in offshore accounts."

Laura covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking with violent, silent sobs. "I ruined everything, David. I brought a monster into my daughter’s life."

"You didn't ruin anything, Laura," David said, kneeling by the bed and gently pulling her hands away from her face. "You survived. And your daughter just executed the smartest tactical delay I’ve ever seen a child pull off. Now, it’s my turn to fight for Thomas's children."
