Chapter 9 - The Settlement of the Ledger

The jury took less than two hours to return a verdict of guilty on all fourteen counts of federal bank fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny.
Two weeks later, Judge Margaret Vance handed down the final sentence: twenty-two years at a federal penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, with zero possibility of parole, accompanied by an absolute restitution order that stripped Ryan of every single asset he would ever possess for the rest of his natural life.
On the final day of the corporate liquidation, David Vance sat with Laura and Emma in his downtown office, signing the final closure papers for Apex Logistics.
"The court has finished the asset distribution," David said, sliding a gold-plated fountain pen across the desk to Laura. "The shell companies have been dissolved. The remaining capital has been legally transferred into a joint survivorship trust for Emma and Noah. The house is completely paid off, and there is enough secondary annuity income to ensure you never have to work another day in your life, Laura."
Laura took the pen, her hand steady and strong as she signed her name on the final document, erasing the last legal tie to the monster who had tried to destroy them.

"Thank you, David," Laura said, her eyes shining with a deep, peaceful clarity. "For everything."
"Don't thank me, Laura," David smiled, looking over at the window where Emma was holding a now six-month-old Noah, showing him the cars driving down the street below. "Thank the accountant’s daughter. She’s the one who kept the ledger true."
