Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Cliff

The escape from San Gabriel Medical Center was not an ambulance ride; it was an armored evacuation.

Within four minutes of the first sniper shot, two matte-black, bulletproof SUV convoys breached the hospital’s subterranean loading dock. Adrian held Ethan tightly against his chest, wrapped in his heavy coat, while Julian and four tactical operatives laid down suppressive fire against three masked gunmen in the hallway.

Grace was practically thrown into the middle seat of the lead SUV before the heavy doors slammed shut with a hydraulic hiss.

The engine roared, and the armored vehicle burst out of the hospital garage, smashing through a wooden security gate and tearing onto the freeway toward the San Gabriel mountains.

Inside the SUV, the air was thick with the scent of leather, gun oil, and high-grade medical supplies.

Ethan, exhausted from the blood loss and the trauma of the gunshots, had fallen into a deep, shock-induced sleep across Grace’s lap. She stroked his soft hair continuously, her eyes wide with terror as she watched the speedometer climb past ninety miles per hour.

Adrian sat across from them, applying a pressure bandage to his own forearm where he had ripped out the IV line. His face was set in stone.

"Where are you taking us?" Grace demanded, her voice shaking violently. "Adrian! Answer me! You can't just kidnap us!"

"I am taking you to a place where my son won't get shot through a hospital window," Adrian replied smoothly, pulling a satellite phone from his pocket. "The Vance family intercepted the red-alert medical ping. They knew if I flew out of New York in a hurry, it meant I was vulnerable."

"This is what I ran from!" Grace cried out, tears spilling over her lashes. "Do you see this?! Ten minutes after you enter his life, men are shooting at him! He is seven years old, Adrian!"

Adrian looked up from his phone. The coldness in his eyes was replaced by a dark, agonizing fury.

"Do you think I wanted this?!" Adrian growled, leaning forward until his face was inches from hers. "Do you think I enjoy knowing that my blood puts a target on his back?! If you had told me seven years ago that I had a son, Grace, the Vance family wouldn't exist today! They would have been buried six feet under the Atlantic Ocean!"

He stood up slightly, his powerful frame filling the luxurious cabin of the SUV.

"You hid him in a flimsy suburban house with a wooden door and a six-dollar deadbolt!" Adrian spat. "You thought poverty and anonymity would protect him! But blood always speaks, Grace. And the moment his body failed him, your little illusion died."

Grace dropped her head, her shoulders shaking. She knew he was right, and that realization hurt far more than his anger. She had spent seven years believing she was building a fortress of safety for Ethan, but the moment a rare genetic illness struck, her simple life had no defenses against the monsters of the world.

Twenty minutes later, the convoy pulled up a winding, private cliffside road on the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Massive iron gates opened automatically, revealing a sprawling, ultra-modern estate built into the sheer rock face overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The fortress was surrounded by twelve-foot reinforced walls, motion-sensing cameras, and armed guards stationed every fifty yards.

The SUV stopped inside a subterranean garage.

"Welcome to the Palisades Compound," Adrian said quietly, opening the vehicle door. "No one enters this rock without my personal biometric authorization. You and Ethan are safe here."

Grace stepped out into the pristine concrete garage, holding Ethan tightly in her arms.

A team of private medical staff dressed in white scrubs was already waiting with a mobile hospital gurney.

"Mr. Blackwood," the lead physician stepped forward respectfully. "The private ICU on the third floor is fully prepped with a continuous blood-warming suite and pediatric monitoring units."

"Take him up," Adrian ordered. "Ensure the mother is with him at all times."

As the nurses gently lifted Ethan onto the gurney and wheeled him toward the private elevator, Grace turned to follow, but Adrian caught her hand.

"Grace," he said softly.

She stopped, looking back at him. His black shirt was stained with his own blood, his dark hair disheveled, but his gaze was pinned entirely on her.

"I am not your enemy," Adrian whispered, his thumb lightly brushing the back of her wrist. "I know you hate me for what I am. But I will die before I let anyone harm either of you again."

Grace pulled her wrist away, but she couldn't look away from his eyes. "I don't hate you, Adrian," she whispered bitterly. "I'm terrified of how much I once loved you."
