Chapter 6 - The War of Words and Blood

The grand marble foyer of the Palisades estate looked like an arena built for titans.
Standing inside the massive double-arched glass entryway was Marcus Vance—a heavy-set, fifty-year-old man with slicked-back gray hair, wearing a five-thousand-dollar tailored pinstripe suit. Behind him stood two nervous-looking social workers carrying clipboards and three armed state troopers.
Outside the glass doors, twenty of Adrian’s heavily armed tactical guards stood in a silent, lethal semicircle, their hands resting on their weapons.
Adrian walked down the sweeping double staircase with measured, slow strides. His hands were tucked casually into his suit pockets. Julian walked two paces behind him.
"Marcus," Adrian said smoothly as he reached the bottom step. "I see you've brought the circus to my front door."
Marcus Vance stepped forward, a triumphant, sneering smile plastered across his wide face. "Adrian! I heard about the tragic incident at the hospital yesterday. A terrifying situation for a little boy, wasn't it?"
"Get to the point before I have my men shoot you for trespassing," Adrian said flatly, stopping ten feet away.
The social worker, a middle-aged woman named Mrs. Gable, stepped forward nervously. "Mr. Blackwood... we received an emergency report indicating that a seven-year-old child, Ethan Bennett, was forcibly removed from a pediatric ICU by unauthorized armed personnel—"
"I am the child's biological father," Adrian cut her off, his voice dropping into a register that made the three state troopers instinctively touch their holsters. "And the medical transport was authorized by the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at San Gabriel Medical Center, signed by the State Attorney General."
Julian stepped forward, handing a thick stack of certified legal documents to Mrs. Gable.
"That document contains the emergency paternity acknowledgment, the medical release forms, and an injunction signed by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court thirty minutes ago," Julian explained smoothly. "Which renders your administrative warrant entirely void."
Mrs. Gable opened the folder, her eyes scanning the official gold seals. Her face went pale. "This... this is a supreme court injunction..."
Marcus Vance’s smile vanished. His face flushed a dark, angry red. "You bought a judge in thirty minutes?!"
"I didn't buy anyone, Marcus," Adrian said, taking two slow steps toward Vance. He towered over the older man, his silver eyes pinning Vance like a bug on a board. "I simply reminded the judiciary of who keeps the peace in this state."
Marcus leaned in, lowering his voice so the state troopers couldn't hear. "You think you've won, Blackwood? The boy is a bastard. He has no legal standing in your syndicate. My family controls three districts in New York now. If you stay in California playing house with your little secretary and her bastard, we will burn your empire to the ground."
Adrian didn't raise his hand. He didn't pull a weapon.
Instead, he leaned down, his face inches from Vance’s ear.
"In seventy-two hours," Adrian whispered, every word sharp as a razor, "I will hold a formal blood coronation at the Blackwood Manor in Chicago. I will name Ethan as my sole legal heir before the entire High Council. And if you or any of your pathetic soldiers set foot in Chicago... I will personally feed your heart to the dogs."
Adrian straightened up, looking at the terrified social workers. "Good day, ladies and gentlemen. My head of security will show you to your vehicles."
Without waiting for a response, Adrian turned his back on Marcus Vance and walked back up the grand staircase.

Outside, Marcus Vance stared at Adrian’s retreating back, his jaw clenching so hard a vein throbbed on his temple.
"Call New York," Vance hissed to his associate as they walked back to their cars. "Tell the Council we strike during the coronation."
