Chapter 7 - The Return to the Shadow Realm

Three days later.
A private Boeing 737 bearing the silver viper emblem of the Blackwood estate glided through the grey, snow-filled clouds above Chicago.
Inside the luxurious private cabin, seven-year-old Ethan was mesmerized by the snow falling outside his window. He wore a custom-tailored navy suit with a tiny silver viper pin on his lapel—a gift from Adrian.
"Mom, look!" Ethan pointed at the skyline of Chicago appearing through the clouds. "It's like a giant city made of ice!"
Grace sat across from him, wearing a elegant charcoal wool dress that Adrian had personally selected for her. She looked out the window, her heart heavy with anxiety.
Chicago.
The city where she had spent her youth, the city where she had worked as a quiet secretary, and the city she had fled seven years ago in the middle of a freezing rainy night.
Adrian sat at the head of the cabin's conference table, reviewing financial ledgers on a secure tablet. He looked up, his silver eyes fixing on Grace’s tense face.
He stood up, walked over, and sat in the leather chair beside her.
"You're nervous," Adrian said quietly.
"We shouldn't be doing this, Adrian," Grace whispered, leaning closer so Ethan wouldn't hear. "A blood coronation? You're introducing a seven-year-old boy to the most dangerous crime bosses in North America! They will see him as a target!"
"They will see him as an untouchable god," Adrian corrected firmly. He reached out, taking her cold hand into his warm, powerful grip. "In my world, Grace, weakness invites attack. If I keep Ethan hidden in a safehouse, every rival family will spend the next decade hunting him. But if I stand before the High Council, place my ring on his finger, and declare him the heir to the Blackwood throne... anyone who looks at him sideways will face the entire fury of my syndicate."
Grace looked down at their joined hands. "And what about me? What am I to them?"
Adrian’s grip tightened gently. His thumb traced the soft skin of her knuckles.
"You are the woman who bore the heir," Adrian murmured, his voice softening into something raw and deeply intense. "And if you will have me, Grace... you will be the queen sitting beside me."
Grace looked up into his silver eyes. The cold, ruthless monster was gone, replaced by the man who had held her seven years ago in his private apartment, promising to protect her from the world.
"Adrian..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "I was terrified of your world."
"I know," Adrian whispered back, leaning in until his forehead rested lightly against hers. "And I spent seven years realizing that my world meant nothing without you in it."

The plane’s landing gear locked into place with a heavy thud.
Below them, the grand gates of the Blackwood Manor—a fifty-acre Gothic estate on the outskirts of Lake Forest—opened to welcome the return of its king.
