Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garden

Morning arrived with a golden burst of California sunlight flooding the master suite.

Ethan was awake early, sitting up in the massive king-sized bed, wearing a pair of plush silk pajamas that had been tailored overnight by the estate staff. He was happily devouring a stack of chocolate chip pancakes while watching cartoons on a seventy-inch pop-up television screen at the foot of the bed.

"Mom! Look!" Ethan cheered, pointing at the TV. "The cartoon guy just flew into the moon!"

Grace smiled warmly, sitting beside him on the bed, dabbing a drop of maple syrup off his chin with a napkin. "Eat slowly, sweetheart. Your stomach is still healing."

"Where is Mr. Adrian?" Ethan asked innocently, looking around the enormous room. "The guy who gave me his blood?"

Before Grace could formulate an answer, the heavy room doors opened.

Adrian stepped inside, wearing a crisp charcoal suit without a tie. Behind him came two servants carrying three large clothing racks filled with children's clothes, shoes, toys, and a brand-new leather satchel.

Ethan’s eyes went wide. "Whoa... is that for me?"

"Everything in this house is for you," Adrian said, walking over to the side of the bed. He looked at Ethan with an expression that was almost entirely devoid of his usual terrifying edge. "How is your arm feeling today, champion?"

"It doesn't hurt at all!" Ethan declared, flexing his small bicep. "See? I'm strong again!"

A genuine, warm laugh escaped Adrian’s throat—a sound so rare and surprising that even Grace blinked in astonishment.

"You are strong," Adrian agreed, leaning down to pat Ethan’s head gently. "Just like your mother."

Ethan looked between Adrian and Grace, his small brow furrowing in deep thought. "Mr. Adrian... why do you have the same silver eyes as me? My mom's eyes are brown."

The room went dead silent.

Grace held her breath, her fingers tightening on the blanket.

Adrian looked down at the boy, his expression turning deeply earnest. He sat down on the edge of the bed, his large frame making the massive mattress look small.

"Because, Ethan," Adrian said softly, his voice clear and steady, "a long time ago, your mother and I had to be separated so you could be safe. But I am your father."

Ethan stopped chewing his pancake. He stared at Adrian for five long seconds, his big silver eyes wide with wonder.

"My... my dad?" Ethan whispered. He looked at Grace, his eyes seeking confirmation. "Mom? Is he my dad?"

Grace felt a tear slip down her cheek, but for the first time in seven years, she didn't feel fear. She saw the way Adrian looked at the boy—not as a piece of property, not as a weapon, but as a precious life he would burn the world to protect.

"Yes, baby," Grace whispered, reaching out to cup Ethan’s cheek. "He's your dad."

Ethan didn't cry. He didn't scream. Instead, a massive, brilliant smile broke across his face. He leaned over the breakfast tray and threw his small arms around Adrian’s neck.

Adrian froze for a fraction of a second, entirely unaccustomed to physical affection, before his powerful arms wrapped around his son, holding him against his chest with a fierce, protective tightness that made Grace’s heart ache with bittersweet emotion.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors were pushed open violently.

Julian hurried into the room, his face pale and grim. "Mr. Blackwood. We have a breach at the main gate."

Adrian’s demeanor changed instantly. The warm father vanished, replaced in a split second by the cold, lethal syndicate ruler. He gently released Ethan, stood up, and buttoned his jacket.

"Who is it?" Adrian asked coldly.

"It’s Marcus Vance," Julian reported, his hand resting on his sidearm. "He brought four state representatives and a child protective services emergency task force. They have an administrative warrant demanding immediate access to the child, citing illegal medical transport from San Gabriel Hospital."

Grace gasped, standing up instantly. "CPS?! Marcus Vance called CPS on us?!"

"He's using the legal system to force us to open the gates," Adrian said, his silver eyes turning to pure ice. "He knows if he can get Ethan into state custody for twenty-four hours, his men can strike the transport vehicle."

Adrian turned to Grace, his voice dropping into an absolute command. "Stay in this room with Ethan. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Julian."

"Adrian, wait!" Grace grabbed his arm. "Marcus Vance is dangerous! He killed your father's business partners!"

Adrian looked down at her hand on his arm, a dark, terrifying smile spreading across his lips.

"He tried to kill my son, Grace," Adrian whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute malice. "He has no idea what kind of devil he just summoned to his doorstep."
