Chapter 2 - The Ghost Network

Marcus inserted the flash drive into a secured, air-gapped laptop. It took three minutes for Adrian’s cyber-specialist to bypass the basic healthcare encryption Nia had placed on the files.
When the screen loaded, thousands of patient records, insurance billing ledgers, and medical charts began cascading down the monitor.
Marcus leaned closer, frowning. "This looks like standard hospital billing data."
"Look closer at the names," Adrian said, leaning over the desk.
Nia had done meticulous work before she was caught. Over the past three weeks at Harbor Point Community Clinic, she had uncovered an illegal, highly sophisticated organ-harvesting and insurance-fraud ring operated under the guise of charitable medical care.
Patients who entered the clinic under public assistance programs—unhoused individuals, poor laborers, immigrants without documentation—were having their routine blood tests and organ scans secretly routed through an offshore server. If a patient’s tissue markers matched high-paying international buyers on the black market, they were invited back for "routine preventative care."
During these minor procedures, patients were subjected to unauthorized organ harvesting under heavy sedation, or administered lethal dosages of mislabeled medications so their organs could be harvested immediately upon "accidental" brain death.
And sitting at the top of the board of directors for Harbor Point Clinic was Victor Raines.
Victor Raines was the head of the Raines Syndicate—Adrian’s chief rival in the Pacific Northwest. While Adrian’s operations were built on logistics, shipping ports, and protection, Raines built his empire on human trafficking, extortion, and illegal medical black markets.
"My God," Marcus muttered, his face turning pale despite his years in the underworld. "Raines was turning a community clinic into a butcher shop. And Nia found the entire paper trail—including the names of the doctors, the corrupt judges taking bribes, and the overseas bank accounts receiving the funds."
"She wasn't just running for her life," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying fury. "She was carrying the evidence that could destroy Raines' entire empire."
At that moment, the door to the study opened slightly.
Nia stood in the doorway, clutching an IV pole with her unbroken right hand, her body trembling under a white robe. Her left eye was bruised purple, but her right eye was clear, sharp, and filled with deep, haunting pain.
"They... they killed Mr. Torres," Nia whispered, her voice rasping from the breathing tube Dr. Chen had removed an hour earlier. "Gerald Torres. He was fifty-four. He had a wife and two daughters. I tried to warn him not to go back for his follow-up appointment... but Raines' men got to him first."
Adrian stood up immediately, walking over to her. He didn't touch her—he gave her space, sensing her trauma—but his presence was like a wall of solid steel protecting her from the cold air.
"You're safe now, Nia," Adrian said softly.
Nia looked at him, her eyes searching his face. "I know who you are, Mr. Vale. I know what people say about you. They say you're a monster who controls the docks."
Adrian didn't deny it. "People are right."
May you like
Nia held up her shaking right hand, pointing at the laptop screen. "Then use your power to destroy him. Because if you don't, dozens more innocent people will die in that clinic."
Adrian reached out and gently touched the silver bracelet on her wrist. "Eleven years ago, you gave my sister peace when she died. Tonight, Nia, I am going to give you justice."
