Chapter 4 - The Recovery and the Vow

While the storm raged across Seattle’s underworld, Mercer Island remained a sanctuary of quiet healing.

For two weeks, Nia stayed inside the Mercer estate under the constant care of Dr. Chen and a team of private nurses hired directly by Adrian. Her physical wounds began to close, her swollen eye healed, and the color returned to her cheeks.

However, the psychological trauma remained. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the headlights of the cars driving past her in the rain. She remembered the feeling of her ribs cracking under Brody’s boots when Raines’ men cornered her behind the clinic.

One evening, as rain tapped gently against the French doors of the estate terrace, Adrian walked into the sunroom carrying a tray with two cups of hot chamomile tea.

He wore a simple black sweater and trousers, looking less like a feared mob boss and more like the quiet man who had once stood beside his sister's hospital bed.

"May I sit?" he asked softly.

Nia looked up from her book and nodded. "You don't have to ask, Adrian. This is your house."

"It’s your sanctuary for as long as you need it," Adrian said, setting the tea down and taking a seat across from her.

Nia picked up her cup, holding it with both hands to feel the warmth. "Marcus told me what you did to Raines’ penthouse. He said you declared open war on his syndicate."

"Raines declared war the moment he laid a hand on you," Adrian replied quietly.

Nia looked at the silver bracelet resting on her left wrist. "I didn't recognize you that night on the road. I was in so much pain... I thought you were just another stranger who was going to drive past me."

Adrian’s eyes darkened with a quiet, profound remorse. "I almost didn't stop, Nia. The first six cars in my convoy missed you. I saw your hand rise from the curb at the last second."

"Why did you look at my wrist?" she asked gently.

Adrian leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "Because eleven years ago, when Laura was lying in that bed, she held my hand and said, 'The nice nurse with the shiny silver bracelet told me I'm going to be an angel tonight.' When she passed, you took that charm off her tiny necklace and had it attached to your bracelet."

Nia’s eyes filled with tears as the memory returned—eleven years ago, a tiny seven-year-old girl named Laura, holding a worn stuffed bear, smiling softly despite her terminal illness.

"I never forgot her," Nia whispered, her voice trembling. "I wore this bracelet every single shift I worked at Harbor Point. Whenever a patient was dying, whenever I felt like quitting because the hospital system was so cold... I looked at this charm and remembered why I became a nurse."

Adrian reached across the small table, gently placing his hand over hers. His touch was warm, solid, and protective.

"You spent your life protecting people who couldn't protect themselves, Nia," Adrian said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with unshakeable resolve. "Now, it's my turn to protect you."
