Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Boss

The next morning, my bank account had a balance that didn't just pay my rent—it bought the building. But the money came with a shadow.

When I opened my apartment door, two men in black suits were waiting in the hallway. Not the hospital security, and certainly not the police. These were Cassano men.

"Mr. Cassano requires a follow-up assessment," one of them said.

"He's in a private suite with the best care," I snapped, trying to keep my voice from shaking. "He doesn't need me."

"He needs to know he’s safe," the man replied. "And he needs to know who else in that hospital knows what you did."

I realized then that I wasn't just a nurse anymore. I was a witness, a consultant, and a potential liability.

I spent the next week living in a whirlwind. I was "transferred" to the private wing, officially under the employment of the Cassano family. My apartment was emptied, and I was moved to a high-security suite in a luxury hotel downtown, guarded twenty-four hours a day.

Matteo was recovering perfectly, but the hospital was in shambles. Dr. Hale had been "retired," and the hospital administration was being investigated by the state medical board. Every night, I sat with Matteo, the only person he would calm down for. Even Alessandro, the man who made the city tremble, would stand in the corner of the room, watching me hold his nephew, his posture softening just a fraction.

But someone else was watching, too.
