Chapter 6 - The Hunt

I didn't go to the police. I knew the Chief of Staff had connections that would erase any report I made. I called the only number I had—Alessandro’s.

"He did it," I said, my breath hitching as I scrambled down the fire escape. "The Chief of Staff. He used a code to authorize the equipment. He’s the one who tried to kill Matteo."

There was a heavy silence on the other end, followed by the sound of a vehicle engine roaring to life. "Stay exactly where you are. Don't trust anyone in that building."

I stayed in the stairwell of the parking garage, the cold night air biting at my skin. I heard the sound of heavy boots echoing below. The Chief of Staff wasn't alone. He had brought security from the hospital—men who were loyal to his paycheck.

I had to move. I climbed to the roof, hoping to reach the helipad.

The wind whipped around me as I reached the top. The city was a grid of lights below. I was cornered.

The door burst open. The Chief of Staff stepped out, his gun raised.

"You're a brilliant nurse, Lauren," he said. "It’s a shame."

Then, the sound of a helicopter blade cut through the night. A spotlight hit the roof, blinding him. A voice boomed over the speakers: "Drop the weapon, or I will turn you into a memory."

Alessandro.
