Chapter 2 - The Auction Notice

At 7:45 AM on Saturday morning, the Gold Coast condo was silent save for the soft clink of fine china in the sunlit dining room. Evelyn Bell sat at the head of the glass table, sipping a fresh mimosa in her pastel cashmere robe. Across from her, Madison sat hunch-backed over a mountain of SAT practice tests, dark circles carved under her eyes.
Ethan paced the room with a cold cup of dark coffee, nervously checking his phone for the hundredth time. Claire hadn't answered his texts. She hadn't called.
"Stop pacing, Ethan," Evelyn sighed, buttering a croissant. "She's throwing a childish tantrum at her mother's house. Once her stitches hurt enough and she realizes how expensive formula and diapers are on her own, she’ll come crawling back to apologize."
"Mom, she had a C-section," Madison mumbled, her pencil trembling over a math grid. "We kicked her out five days after major surgery. It was horrible."
"You concentrate on your quadratic equations, Madison," Evelyn snapped, her voice turning sharp. "This family is making sacrifices so you can get into Northwestern!"
Before Madison could respond, the heavy brass door chime echoed through the foyer.
Ethan frowned. "Are you expecting a delivery?"
"It’s probably the dry cleaning," Evelyn said dismissively.
Ethan unlocked the solid oak door. Standing in the hallway was not a delivery driver, but a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit holding a thick, crimson-stamped legal folio.
"Ethan Bell?" the man asked in a loud, clear voice that resonated across the high ceilings of the condo.
"Yes?"
"You have been officially served," the process server announced, handing over the heavy packet. "Notice of Emergency Lis Pendens, Petition for Forced Partition Sale, and an Ex Parte Injunction filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County by Arthur Vance on behalf of Claire Vance-Bell."
Evelyn dropped her sterling silver butter knife onto her plate with a sharp clatter. "What did you just say?"
The process server didn't answer. He turned on his heel and walked toward the elevators.
Ethan’s hands shook so violently the pages fluttered like autumn leaves. "Mom... Oh God, Mom..."
Evelyn snatched the papers from her son's hands, her eyes sweeping over the bold, black legal typeface.
EMERGENCY NOTICE OF FORCED PARTITION SALE & INTERIM EVICTION ORDER.
Notice is hereby given that the real property situated at 1200 N. Lake Shore Drive, Unit 14B, is subject to immediate judicial liquidation to satisfy non-marital equity claims and outstanding fraudulent liens.
OCCUPANTS MUST VACATE THE PREMISES WITHIN SEVENTY-TWO (72) HOURS.
"This is ridiculous!" Evelyn shrieked, her face turning a mottled, furious red. "She can't sell this apartment! It's in your name!"
"Mom, read paragraph four!" Ethan choked out, sinking into a dining chair, pulling at his collar as if he couldn't breathe. "She found the second mortgage. She found the forged signature. Arthur Vance filed criminal fraud affidavits with the state prosecutor’s office!"
Madison stopped writing. She looked from her trembling brother to her pale, sweating mother. "What second mortgage?"
Evelyn’s composure shattered. The sophisticated, high-society persona vanished, replaced by wild, bug-eyed panic. She grabbed Ethan by his lapels. "Call her! Call Claire right now! Tell her we’ll talk! Tell her she can bring the babies back!"
Ethan dialed Claire’s number on speakerphone. It rang once. Twice.
A smooth, professional male voice answered instead. "This is Arthur Vance, legal counsel for Mrs. Claire Vance-Bell. All communication with my client must go through my office. Be advised this call is being recorded for criminal proceedings."
"Put Claire on the phone!" Evelyn screamed into the receiver. "She is ruining this family over a petty misunderstanding!"
May you like
"It is no misunderstanding, Mrs. Bell," Arthur Vance’s voice returned, dropping into a tone as cold and hard as Chicago winter ice. "You have seventy-two hours to clear your personal belongings from the condo. If you or your son step foot on the property after Tuesday at 9:00 AM, you will be arrested for criminal trespass. Have a pleasant weekend."
The line went dead.
