Chapter 7 - Madison’s Awakening

While Evelyn’s world crumbled, a very different story was unfolding in Evanston.
Madison Bell stood in the doorway of Claire’s new sunlit Evanston brownstone, carrying a small worn backpack. She was no longer wearing her mother’s forced designer clothes; she wore simple jeans and a sweater, her face clear of fear for the first time in her life.
Claire opened the door, holding three-month-old Hayes in her arms.
"Claire," Madison said softly, her voice shaking. "I... I packed my things. I moved out of Mom's apartment last night."
Claire stepped aside, opening the door wide. "Come in, Madison."
Madison walked into the warm, fragrant living room, looking around at the bright wooden floors, the baby toys neatly organized in woven baskets, and the quiet peace that filled the home. Tears filled the seventeen-year-old’s eyes.
"I am so sorry," Madison sobbed, dropping her backpack. "I was so scared of Mom that night... I should have stood up to her. I should have stopped her from throwing you out!"
Claire set Hayes down in his swing and walked over to her sister-in-law, wrapping her in a warm, protective hug.
"You were a child being emotionally abused by a narcissist, Madison," Claire whispered gently into her hair. "You were not responsible for her evil."
Madison pulled back, wiping her eyes, and reached into her bag. She pulled out a small black flash drive.
"When I was packing up my old bedroom at Mom's place yesterday," Madison said, her eyes burning with resolve, "I found Mom’s second laptop—the one she kept locked in her safe. I unlocked it using Dad’s old birthday."
Claire looked at the drive. "What’s on it?"
"Every bank record from the offshore accounts," Madison revealed. "It proves Mom didn't just steal my college trust—she’s been hiding two hundred thousand dollars in a Swiss account while claiming to the court that she was completely bankrupt!"
Claire smiled—a warm, triumphant smile. "Madison... you just handed the district attorney the final nail in her coffin."

"Good," Madison said, her jaw setting firm. "I don't care about her money anymore, Claire. I took my SATs on my own terms last week. I got a 1540. And I’m going to Northwestern on a full academic merit scholarship."
Claire pulled Madison into another tight hug. "Your father would be so proud of you, Madison. And so am I."
