Chapter 8 - The Legal Firestorm

Two weeks later, the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed to capacity for the state indictment of Evelyn Bell.

Evelyn sat at the defense table in a stark, orange jumpsuit, her wrists bound by chrome handcuffs. Without her expensive makeup, hair styling, and designer clothes, she looked like what she truly was: a defeated, bitter woman facing the consequences of a lifetime of deception.

The prosecutor stood before the judge, reading from the master indictment sheet provided by Arthur Vance and Madison's evidence:

"Your Honor, the State charges Evelyn Bell with two counts of Grand Larceny, three counts of Forgery in the First Degree, Probate Fraud, and Intentional Concealment of Assets during judicial bankruptcy proceedings."

Evelyn’s public defender stood up weakly. "Your Honor, my client is a senior citizen with no prior criminal record—"

"Your client," the judge interrupted sternly, his eyes flashing behind his spectacles, "stole millions of dollars from her own children, committed felony forgery against her sick daughter-in-law five days after major surgery, and hid hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal offshore tax havens!"

The judge slammed his gavel down hard.

"Bail is denied. Evelyn Bell is remanded to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections pending trial, where she faces a mandatory sentence of eight to fifteen years in state prison."

Evelyn let out a sharp, pitiful shriek as two armed bailiffs grabbed her arms, hauling her toward the heavy steel holding doors. She looked frantically across the courtroom, searching for her family.

She looked at Ethan, who sat in the third row, looking down at his hands, refusing to meet her eyes.

She looked at Madison, who sat beside Claire, holding Claire's hand with absolute pride and strength.

"Ethan! Madison! Save me!" Evelyn screamed as the steel doors began to close. "I did it for you! I did it all for this family!"

May you like

"No, Mom," Madison said quietly from the gallery, her voice echoing in the marble room. "You did it for yourself."

The heavy doors clicked shut with a loud, final THUD.
