Chapter 3 - The Secret of Father-in-Law

Four miles away in Evanston, the morning sun poured through Jenna’s bay windows, illuminating stacks of old leather-bound journals and sealed financial archives spread across the dining room table.

Claire sat upright in a supportive armchair, wearing a comfortable linen dress. Her face was still pale, but her eyes held a sharp, calculating focus. Henry and Hayes were sleeping side-by-side in a double bassinet, fed and warm.

"Where did you get these archives, Claire?" Arthur Vance asked, putting down his glasses as he examined a yellowed probate document from four years ago.

"My late father-in-law, Richard Bell, trusted me," Claire explained quietly. "Before he died of pancreatic cancer three years ago, he called me to his hospital room. He knew Ethan was weak, and he knew Evelyn was a black hole of financial greed. He handed me a key to a private safety deposit box at First Midwest Bank."

Arthur opened a dusty navy ledger from the box. Inside were meticulous handwritten entries, bank wire receipts, and a copy of Richard Bell's original, unredacted last will and testament.

As Arthur read through the pages, his mouth drifted open in genuine shock.

"My God," Arthur whispered.

Jenna leaned over from the kitchen counter. "What is it, Uncle Arthur?"

"Evelyn has spent the last three years telling the entire Gold Coast social circuit that Richard died broke, leaving her dependent on Ethan," Arthur said, turning a stamped probate page. "It was all a lie."

"What actually happened?" Claire asked, leaning forward.

"Richard didn't die broke," Arthur revealed, his voice shaking with incredulity. "Richard discovered six months before his death that Evelyn had opened three offshore credit cards in his name, accumulating nearly eight hundred thousand dollars in secret debt to fund her shopping addiction. He altered his true will."

Arthur pointed his finger at a seal stamped in red wax.

"Richard placed his entire estate—a three-million-dollar irrevocable trust—into a secret minor's fund specifically for Madison's college education and Ethan’s children. Evelyn was explicitly cut out of the estate entirely!"

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "Then how did Evelyn get control of the money?"

"Look at the trustee signature on the probate submission from three years ago," Arthur pointed to a document filed with the county. "Evelyn suppressed Richard’s true will. She filed a forged codicil naming herself as sole executor, stole Madison’s college trust fund, and spent three million dollars in thirty-six months!"

Claire’s blood ran cold. "She stole her own daughter's future? She stole my children's inheritance?"

"She didn't just steal it," Arthur declared, standing up and pulling out his smartphone. "She committed probate fraud, grand larceny, and tax evasion at the federal level. She used Ethan to forge your signature on the condo's second mortgage because her stolen trust money had finally run completely dry!"

Claire looked down at her twin boys. Evelyn had thrown her and her five-day-old newborns into the night under the pretense of "protecting Madison’s SAT prep."

In reality, Evelyn was a serial fraudster who had robbed her own dead husband, betrayed her son, and stolen her daughter's entire life savings.

"Arthur," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "I want full criminal charges authorized. And I want Madison to know the truth."
