Chapter 5 - Ethan’s Desperate Plea

On Tuesday morning at 8:30 AM, thirty minutes before the court-ordered eviction deadline, Ethan arrived at Jenna’s home in Evanston.
He didn't look like the confident, handsome financial analyst who had lived in a Gold Coast penthouse. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, his eyes bloodshot and rimmed with red. He looked broken, diminished, and completely destroyed.
Jenna answered the door, standing in the doorway like a stone wall. "You have two minutes, Ethan. Make it fast."
Ethan stepped into the foyer. Claire was standing near the dining table holding Henry, dressed in a simple, elegant navy sweater.
Ethan dropped to his knees right on the hardwood floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Claire... please," Ethan wept, reaching out toward her, though he didn't dare touch her. "Please, stop the lawsuit. The news media is outside my office. My boss called me into HR this morning—I’m suspended without pay. The bank is freezing all my accounts!"
Claire looked down at her husband with neither anger nor pity. She looked at him as if he were a complete stranger.
"You're not crying because you hurt me, Ethan," Claire said softly, her voice steady and clear. "You're not crying because you let your five-day-old sons be thrown into the freezing night air. You're crying because the bill for your cowardice finally arrived."
"I didn't know about the trust fund!" Ethan choked out, slamming his fist weakly against his own thigh. "I swear to God, Claire, I didn't know my mother stole Madison's money! She told me the second mortgage was just a temporary bridge loan until her investments matured! She manipulated me!"
"You're a thirty-two-year-old financial analyst, Ethan," Claire replied, her voice turning sharp as a razor. "You know what a forged signature looks like. You held the pen while your mother erased me from our life."
"I was terrified of losing her approval!" Ethan cried. "I was weak!"
"Yes," Claire agreed coldly. "You were weak. And because you chose your mother’s approval over your wife and children, you lost everything."
Ethan looked up, his tears streaming down his pale cheeks. "What about Henry and Hayes? Please, Claire... let me see my sons."
Claire stepped back, holding Henry closer to her chest.

"You will see your sons through a court-appointed supervisor after you complete six months of psychological evaluation, financial restitution, and cut every single tie with Evelyn Bell," Claire stated with absolute authority. "If you ever defend that woman in my presence again, you will never see their faces until they are eighteen years old."
Ethan buried his face in his hands, nodding helplessly as he realized the woman he had treated like "temporary staff" was now the absolute master of his fate.
