Chapter 1 - The Ultrasound Appointment

The air inside the private clinic's VIP suite was thick with celebration. Seven members of the Hale family—Preston, his parents, his two sisters, and their husbands—stood clustered around the leather recliners, clutching glasses of sparkling cider.

At the center of the room, Brielle Foster lay back against the examination table, her hands resting possessively over her four-month bump. Her smile was triumphant as she glanced at Preston’s mother, Evelyn, who was already holding a framed blue baby outfit adorned with the words THE HALE HEIR.

"I still can't believe it," Evelyn gushed, wiping a tear from her eye. "After two granddaughters... finally, a boy to carry on the Hale name and inherit the family holdings."

Preston stood beside Brielle, his hand resting on her shoulder. The ink on his divorce papers was barely dry, but his mind was miles away from Lena and his two daughters, Maya and Chloe. "I told you, Mom," Preston said, beaming. "It’s a new era for our family."

The sonographer applied the clear ultrasound gel to Brielle’s stomach and smoothed the transducer across her abdomen. The black-and-white image flickered to life on the high-definition ceiling monitors. The room went silent in anticipation, waiting for the crisp sound of the fetal heartbeat.

Dr. Aris Thorne, a senior obstetrician with thirty years of clinical experience, adjusted her spectacles. She zoomed in on the screen, her eyes narrowing as she measured the femur length and fetal crown-rump length.

"There’s the heartbeat," Dr. Thorne said smoothly, pointing out the tiny rhythm.

Evelyn clapped her hands. "Look at him! Look at our boy!"

Dr. Thorne didn't join in the laughter. She clicked through a series of biometric readouts, comparing the current scan against Brielle’s medical history file on her adjacent monitor. Her hand froze on the trackball.

She clicked again. Then once more.

"Dr. Thorne?" Brielle asked, her voice dropping into a tight, nervous register. "Is something wrong? You said last week the anatomy scan was clear."

Dr. Thorne slowly reached for her microphone, muted the sound of the heartbeat, and pulled her glasses off her face. She swivelled her chair around to face the seven members of the Hale family staring at her.

"Ms. Foster," Dr. Thorne asked, her tone entirely stripped of casual bedside warmth. "I am looking at your intake records from four months ago, as well as the genetic screening panel submitted three weeks ago."

Preston frowned, stepping forward. "Is there a developmental issue with my son, Doctor?"

Dr. Thorne turned her gaze directly to Preston, then back to the medical screen.

"Mr. Hale," Dr. Thorne said calmly. "According to the karyotype analysis and the anatomical markers on this high-resolution ultrasound, this fetus is indisputably female. Furthermore, based on the gestational age measurements of twenty-two weeks... this pregnancy was conceived in late November."

Preston’s face went blank. "Late November? That's impossible. Brielle and I didn't... we weren't together until January."

The room went dead silent. Every single person in the Hale family froze, their glasses suspended halfway to their lips.
