Chapter 2 - The Biological Math

The silence inside the clinic suite felt like an physical weight.
"What did you just say?" Evelyn demanded, her voice cracking as she clutched the blue baby outfit so hard the fabric tore slightly. "Did you say female?"
"Yes, Mrs. Hale," Dr. Thorne replied, pointing a pen at the monitor. "The anatomical structures are unmistakably female. There is no male chromosome present in the non-invasive prenatal testing report. But more importantly, the fetal size indicates a conception date of approximately November 20th."
Preston slowly pulled his hand away from Brielle’s shoulder. His mind raced back to November. In November, he had still been living in the master bedroom with Lena. He had been working late, yes, but Brielle had been in London on a three-week corporate assignment for her PR firm.
"Brielle..." Preston said, his voice dropping into a cold, trembling whisper. "You were in London in November."
Brielle’s face was drained of all color. Her lips quivered as she sat up on the table, trying frantically to grab Preston's coat sleeve. "Preston, listen to me! The doctor is making a mistake! These machines aren't one hundred percent accurate! You know I love you! It’s your baby!"
"The genetic NIPT blood test has an accuracy rate of ninety-nine point nine percent, Ms. Foster," Dr. Thorne stated factually, closing the laptop folder. "And as for the timeline... the data does not lie."
"Get off me," Preston snarled, shoving Brielle’s hands away.
Evelyn stepped forward, her eyes wide with unadulterated fury. "You lied to us? You let us throw you a shower? You let my son end his marriage for a child that isn't even a boy—and isn't even HIS?!"
"It IS his!" Brielle sobbed, tears ruining her expensive makeup. "Preston, don't listen to them! We can get another opinion!"
"Who were you with in London, Brielle?" Preston yelled, his voice echoing out into the quiet clinic hallway. "WHO WERE YOU WITH?!"
Before Brielle could formulate another lie, Preston’s phone vibrated violently in his pocket. He pulled it out with shaking hands, expecting a text from his lawyer about the final court filing.
Instead, it was an automated email notification from his home security system: ALL MOTION SENSORS DEACTIVATED. MAIN PROPERTY KEYS SURRENDERED.

Directly beneath it was a single text message from Lena’s primary phone number.
“The house is unlocked. My keys are on the kitchen counter. Don't bother calling. Maya, Chloe, and I are already in the air.”
