Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Preston buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, dry sob. "My company is dying, Lena. Hartwell Global bought out my primary shipping partner. We’re going to be bankrupt by the end of the month if your board doesn't renew our regional contract. My parents are losing their house!"

I looked at him—not with hatred, but with a profound, quiet clarity.

"You came all the way to England hoping I would save your business," I said softly.

"You used to love me!" Preston shouted, looking up, his eyes bloodshot. "We spent eleven years together! Doesn't that mean anything to you?! How can you sit there in this grand mansion and watch my family starve?!"

"Your family isn't starving, Preston," I replied coldly. "Your pride is. And for eleven years, I carried the weight of your family on my back. I organized your business schedules, I managed your household, I protected your reputation, and I raised your children while you treated me like an inconvenience."

I pulled a file folder from the desk drawer and opened it.

"I have no interest in bankrupting Hale Logistics," I said. "Hartwell Global will extend a standard three-year commercial freight contract to your firm—on two conditions."

Preston blinked, wiping his cheeks frantically. "Condition? Anything, Lena. Name it."

"First," I said, pointing to the paper. "You will sign a formal, legally binding international custody agreement. You will pay standard court-ordered child support into a trust fund set up for Maya and Chloe's university education. You will have supervised summer visitation rights in England—and only in England—provided the girls consent to seeing you."

Preston swallowed hard. "And the second condition?"

"Second," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You will never step foot on this estate unannounced again. You will communicate with me exclusively through my legal counsel. You will respect my boundaries, or the freight contract will be voided instantly."

Preston stared at the contract laid out on the mahogany desk. He realized then, with absolute certainty, that the woman who had once spent years trying to earn his love was gone forever. Standing before him was a sovereign woman who owed him nothing.

With a trembling hand, Preston picked up the pen and signed his name at the bottom of the page.
