Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

Two years later.
The summer afternoon sun cast long, beautiful shadows across the manicured lawns of Hartwell Manor.
Tables draped in crisp white linen were set up near the rose gardens, filled with platters of fresh strawberries, clotted cream, and sparkling champagne. Over fifty guests—local friends, business partners, and family from across Europe—were gathered to celebrate the tenth birthday of my eldest daughter, Maya.
Maya and Chloe were running through the lawn with their friends, their laughter filling the clear summer sky.
I stood on the stone terrace, holding a glass of iced tea, wearing a flowing yellow silk dress that caught the soft breeze. Beside me stood Julian Sterling—Lord Sterling’s youngest son, a brilliant international attorney who had spent the last eighteen months working alongside me at Hartwell Global, and who had quietly, patiently earned a permanent place in my heart.
Julian wrapped a warm arm around my waist, leaning down to kiss my temple. "You look radiant today, Lena."
"I feel radiant," I smiled, leaning back against his shoulder.
"I just received an update from our Nashville office," Julian said gently. "Preston’s business has stabilized under the new management terms. He sent his child support payment for the quarter, along with a birthday card for Maya."
"Did he ask for anything else?" I inquired softly.
"No," Julian replied. "He kept his word. He asked if the girls were happy."
"And what did you tell him?"
Julian looked out at the lawn, where Maya was blowing out the candles on her three-tiered birthday cake while Chloe cheered beside her.
"I told him the truth," Julian smiled. "I told him they are thriving."
I looked out over my home, my daughters, and the magnificent life I had built from the ashes of a broken past.
Five minutes after my divorce, a man had told me to take my daughters because he believed they were secondary to a future he hadn't even earned. He thought he was closing a door on us.
May you like
He didn't realize that he had simply unlocked the gate to our freedom.
I took a deep breath of the sweet, lavender-scented air, held Julian’s hand tightly in mine, and walked down the terrace steps to join my daughters in the sunshine.
