Chapter 6 - The Spiral in Nashville

Back in Tennessee, six months passed, and the Hale family’s carefully constructed social world began to crumble from the inside out.
Without the financial stability and operational oversight I had quietly provided to Preston’s regional logistics firm during our marriage, his business began to bleed money. Preston was brilliant at sales, but he possessed zero aptitude for corporate risk management or contract negotiations—roles I had handled behind the scenes for a decade while he took the credit.
Furthermore, the scandal surrounding the failed ultrasound had become public knowledge among Nashville’s tight-knit business community.
Brielle had moved out of Preston’s apartment after a bitter legal battle over shared credit card debts. Evelyn Hale, humiliated by her own grand declarations about her "heir," had withdrawn entirely from her social clubs, refusing to face her friends.
Sitting in his messy office at Hale Logistics, Preston stared at his company's quarterly earnings report.
NET OPERATING LOSS: $1.8 MILLION.
His chief financial officer knocked softly on the door frame and stepped inside. "Preston... we have a serious problem."
"What now, Tom?" Preston snapped, rubbing his tired, bloodshot eyes.
"Our primary shipping partner, Southern Coast Transport, just canceled our contract," Tom said, laying a legal notice on the desk. "They’ve been acquired by a European luxury conglomerate that is consolidating regional freight lines."
Preston gritted his teeth. "Who acquired them? I'll call the CEO directly."
Tom cleared his throat awkwardly. "The parent company is Hartwell Global Holdings. It's an international firm based out of Somerset, England."
Preston’s hand froze mid-air. Hartwell.
"Who... who is the listed Managing Director?" Preston asked, his voice shaking.
Tom turned the page. "The principal shareholder and Chairwoman is listed as Lena Hartwell."

Preston felt as if the room had suddenly run out of oxygen. He grabbed the paper, staring at his ex-wife’s name written in bold, gold-embossed lettering at the top of the corporate seal.
She hadn't just left the country with his daughters. She had built an international financial empire right under his nose.
