Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

One year later.
The morning sun washed over the green hills of upstate New York, illuminating a beautiful, modern wooden complex surrounded by gardens, physical therapy tracks, and open-air athletic fields.
A large wooden sign near the entrance read: THE VANCE-STERLING RECOVERY CENTER — FREEDOM THROUGH TRUTH.
The center, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of Arthur Sterling’s estate, was a non-profit facility dedicated to providing free physical therapy, neurological rehabilitation, and legal protection for children suffering from mobility disabilities and medical exploitation.
Arthur Sterling had been sentenced to thirty-five years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole, while Beatrice Vance and his legal co-conspirators were serving lengthy prison terms for corporate fraud.
On the central outdoor track, Clara stood wearing athletic clothes and running shoes.
She took a deep breath of the cool morning air, looking down at her legs. The cane was gone. Her muscles had recovered through months of grueling, daily physical therapy, guided by Dr. Reed and supported by Leo.
"Ready?" a voice called out.
Leo stood fifty yards down the track, holding a stopwatch, his hazel eyes shining with warmth and admiration.
"Don't go easy on the timing!" Clara called back with a radiant smile.
"I never do!" Leo laughed.
Clara leaned forward, set her foot against the starting line, and pushed off.
She ran.
Her feet struck the red track surface with a rhythmic, powerful cadence. The wind whipped through her long hair, pushing the soft morning sunlight across her face. There were no chairs, no locked doors, no blue capsules, and no lies.
She ran past the finish line, straight into Leo’s arms. He caught her, lifting her off her feet as they both laughed into the open sky.
"New personal best," Leo said, looking at the stopwatch before looking into her eyes. "You're fast, Clara."
Clara looked back toward the main building, where dozens of young patients were sitting in the morning sun, watching her with hope in their eyes.
May you like
She held Leo’s hand tightly, feeling the warm sunshine on her face and the solid earth beneath her feet.
"I'm not running away anymore, Leo," Clara said softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. "I'm running forward."
