Chapter 5 - The Safehouse in the Pines

Two hours later, the SUV pulled into a hidden driveway deep in the pine forests of upstate New York, stopping in front of an old stone hunting cabin hidden from satellite view by dense canopy cover.

Inside, the cabin was warm, lit by kerosene lamps, its walls covered in whiteboards filled with corporate organizational charts, wire transfer logs, and medical supply manifests.

Leo helped Clara into an armchair near a roaring fireplace, wrapping a thick wool blanket around her shoulders before handing her a mug of hot tea.

"Are you okay?" Leo asked softly, kneeling beside her chair. His knuckles were raw and bloody from his fight with the security guards.

Clara looked at her legs beneath the blanket. She reached down with her hand, pressing her fingers against her thigh. She could feel the pressure. She had always been able to feel the pressure. Her father had convinced her that sensation without movement was just phantom nerve pain.

"My legs..." Clara whispered, tears finally breaking free and spilling over her cheeks. "They aren't broken?"

"No, Clara," Dr. Reed said, walking over with a tablet displaying a series of muscle scans. "Your spinal cord healed completely four weeks after the surgery. But three years ago, Arthur’s hedge fund was on the verge of bankruptcy due to a massive failed bet on synthetic clinical trials. He needed capital, fast."

"So he used me," Clara said, her voice trembling.

"He realized a paralyzed teenage heiress was the ultimate marketing tool," Dr. Reed explained grimly. "He created the Clara Sterling Mobility Trust. Within six months, he raised two hundred million dollars in non-taxable public donations and corporate grants. But to keep the money flowing, you had to stay in that chair."

"And your father?" Clara asked, looking at Leo.

Leo’s hazel eyes darkened with grief. "My dad was the one who designed the NMI-7 compound. Arthur told him it was being used in animal testing. When my dad found out Arthur was administering it to you in your daily vitamins, he tried to blow the whistle. Three days later, my dad's car went off a cliff in Switzerland."

Leo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a worn USB drive attached to a silver dog tag.

"Before he died, my dad hid the master decryption key to Arthur’s offshore accounts," Leo said. "He told me that if anything happened to him, I had to find you. Because you were the only one who could open the trust files—they're locked behind your bio-metric signature."

Clara looked at the silver drive, then at Leo. "He murdered your father... and he stole three years of my life."

"He thinks he’s invincible," Leo said, his jaw tightening. "He thinks because he owns the police commissioner, the board of directors, and half the judges in the state, he can hide behind his money. But he doesn't know we have this."

"He will come for us," Clara said.

"Let him come," Dr. Reed said, pulling a secure satellite phone from her bag. "Because tomorrow morning, we aren't hiding. We're taking your father down."
