Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Federal Plaza

At 8:30 AM, the courtyard in front of the Thurgood Marshall Federal Courthouse in Manhattan was packed with over fifty news crews, satellite trucks, and hundreds of shouting protesters holding signs reading JUSTICE FOR CLARA and ARREST ARTHUR STERLING.
A fleet of black armored SUVs pulled up to the curb.
Arthur Sterling stepped out, surrounded by ten high-priced defense attorneys and four personal bodyguards. He wore a crisp gray suit, his face composed, his posture confident as he walked up the granite steps toward the court entrance.
He believed the cabin fire had succeeded. Viktor had called him at 4:00 AM to report that the cabin was completely destroyed.
As Arthur reached the top of the courthouse steps, he turned to face the media, raising his hands for calm.
"Good morning, members of the press," Arthur said into a cluster of microphones. "Today is a sad day for my family. I am here to voluntarily cooperate with federal authorities to clear my name of the heinous, delusional fabrications spread by bad actors who tragically took the life of my sweet daughter, Clara, in a fire late last night—"
"I'm not dead, Arthur."
The crowd gasped.
A sleek silver sedan pulled up to the foot of the courthouse steps.
The rear door opened.
Clara Sterling stepped out onto the pavement.
She wasn't in a wheelchair. She wore a simple dark blue coat, jeans, and sneakers. She walked with a noticeable limp, her steps deliberate and supported by a wooden cane, but she was standing entirely on her own two feet.
Beside her walked Leo Vance, carrying the silver USB drive, and Dr. Evelyn Reed, her head bandaged but her posture straight.
The flashbulbs from fifty cameras exploded in a blinding wave of light.
Arthur froze on the top step, his jaw dropping, his hand hovering frozen in mid-air. "Clara...?"
Clara walked up the wide granite steps, one step at a time, her cane clicking rhythmically against the stone. She stopped five feet away from her father, looking up into the eyes of the man who had kept her caged.
"You told me I was broken," Clara said, her voice carrying clearly through the silent plaza. "You told me I was helpless. You told me I would never stand again."
"Clara... my sweet girl..." Arthur stammered, stepping toward her with his arms open, trying to reach for his practiced act. "It’s a miracle! You're walking!"
"Don't touch me," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, iron authority that made the billionaire stop in his tracks.
She pulled the silver USB drive from her pocket and handed it directly to the Chief Assistant United States Attorney, who was standing beside four armed Federal Marshals at the court entrance.
"On this drive," Clara announced to the news cameras, "are the encrypted bank accounts showing three hundred million dollars stolen from the Clara Sterling Trust, along with the wire logs ordering the murder of Dr. Marcus Vance."
The U.S. Attorney checked the drive, nodded to his team, and turned to Arthur Sterling.
"Arthur Sterling," the U.S. Attorney declared, pulling a signed federal warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, medical endangerment, attempted murder, and conspiracy."
Two Federal Marshals stepped forward, grabbing Arthur’s arms and forcing them behind his back. The steel handcuffs clicked loudly over his wrists.
"Clara! Tell them!" Arthur shrieked as he was forced down the steps toward a police van, his composure completely shattered, his hair wild, his face red with rage. "I did it for the family! I did it for the legacy! You owe me everything!"
May you like
Clara stood at the top of the steps, supported by her cane, her head held high as she watched her father dragged away in chains.
"I owe you nothing," she whispered.
