Chapter 2 - The Intruder with the Envelope

The ballroom fell into an immediate, shocked silence.

At the entrance of the main aisle stood a teenage boy no older than seventeen. He wore a scuffed leather jacket, dark jeans, and muddy boots that stood in stark contrast to the tuxedo-clad guests surrounding him. His face was sharp, his jaw set, and his hazel eyes were fixed directly on Arthur Sterling.

Two muscular security guards immediately stepped forward from the perimeter, reaching for their earpieces. "Sir, step out right now or we will use force."

"Let them try, Arthur," the boy said, walking past the guards without breaking stride. He held up a thick, yellowed manila envelope stamped with a red seal: CONFIDENTIAL — SWISS NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE, ZURICH. "Or do you want me to read page fourteen out loud into the broadcast microphone?"

Arthur’s face hardened. For a fraction of a second, the noble, grieving father mask slipped, revealing a flash of absolute, cold terror. He quickly recovered, stepping out from behind the lectern with an easy, patronizing laugh.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize," Arthur announced into the microphone. "This young man is Leo Vance, the estranged son of my late head of research, Dr. Marcus Vance. Poor Leo has been struggling with psychological trauma since his father's tragic death last year. Security, please handle this discreetly."

"My father didn't die of a heart attack, Arthur!" Leo roared, his voice echoing off the high marble walls as he dodged a guard’s reaching hand. He sprinted straight up the center aisle toward the dais, sliding the heavy manila envelope across the polished floor until it hit the footrest of Clara’s wheelchair.

Clara stared down at the envelope. Her heart slammed against her ribs. "Leo?" she whispered.

She remembered him. Four years ago, before her accident, Leo’s father was the lead scientist at Sterling Bio-Tech. Leo had been the quiet boy who sat in the mansion library while their fathers discussed clinical trials. Then, after her accident, Dr. Vance had mysteriously resigned, moved to Europe, and died eighteen months later.

"Open it, Clara!" Leo yelled as three security guards tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back. "Read the nerve conduction logs from Montreux! Look at the date! October 12th of last year!"

"Clara, do not touch that," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding register as he stepped over to her side, reaching down to grab the envelope. "The boy is unhinged. He’s trying to ruin our family day."

"Dad, stop," Clara said.

For the first time in three years, Clara didn't pull back. She snatched the envelope from the floor before Arthur’s hand could close around it.
