Chapter 2 - The Morning After

Adrian Vaughn woke up at 7:00 AM in the master suite of his ten-million-dollar penthouse in SoHo.
He stretched his arms, feeling the lingering, pleasant buzz of victory. The birthday gala had been a resounding success. He had spent three hours after the incident charming Harlan Oates, laying the groundwork for a two-hundred-million-dollar cash injection into Vaughn Dynamics that would solidify his company's IPO next quarter.
He glanced at the empty side of the bed.
Still pouting, Adrian thought with a dismissive smirk. Vivian had probably taken a hotel room or run off to her quiet little art restoration studio. He made a mental note to send her a dozen white roses later in the week—nothing too expensive, just enough to let her know he was ready to let her back into his good graces once she apologized for embarrassing him with the card.
He slid out of bed, pulled on a silk robe, and walked down the marble hallway into his private kitchen.
His assistant, Marcus, was standing near the island. Marcus was usually immaculate, but this morning his tie was crooked, his hair was uncombed, and his face was as pale as chalk. He was holding three buzzing smartphones in his hands.
"Morning, Marcus," Adrian said smoothly, pouring himself a cup of espresso from the automated machine. "Did Harlan’s legal team send over the term sheet for the Meridian deal yet?"
Marcus looked up, his lips trembling. "Mr. Vaughn... Harlan Oates backed out of the deal at 1:15 AM."
Adrian froze, his coffee cup hovering inches from his lips. He let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "What are you talking about? Harlan was laughing with me at the bar until midnight! We shook hands on the term sheet!"
"His office sent a formal termination notice three hours ago," Marcus stammered, handing a tablet across the island. "They cited 'unforeseen reputational liabilities and corporate governance risks.' They didn't just back out of the new fund, Adrian... they pulled their existing thirty million from our secondary liquidity pool."
Adrian slammed his espresso cup down onto the quartz counter, shattering the delicate porcelain. Dark liquid splashed across his silk robe.
"Are you insane?!" Adrian roared. "Call Harlan right now! Get him on the line!"
"I tried!" Marcus cried, shrinking back. "His secretary said Mr. Oates is currently in a private meeting with Arthur Blackwood!"
The name hung in the air like a suffocating cloud.
Adrian felt a tiny, cold knot form in his stomach. "Arthur Blackwood? Why would Harlan be meeting with Vivian’s father? The old man is retired. He spends all his time painting in Greenwich."
Before Marcus could answer, the home phone rang. Simultaneously, both of Marcus’s work phones began chiming relentlessly.
"Don't answer them!" Adrian ordered, his mind racing. "Check the Bloomberg terminal! What is happening to our stock pre-market?!"
Marcus pulled up the financial terminal on his tablet. His eyes widened in sheer horror.
"Adrian... the SEC just issued a formal freeze order on our Q2 earnings filing," Marcus whispered, reading the red text scrolling across the screen. "An anonymous whistleblower submitted sixty gigabytes of encrypted internal ledgers showing that our Cayman subsidiary misstated liability ratios by forty-two percent."
Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. His knees felt suddenly weak.
Those Cayman ledgers were stored on a private, air-gapped server in his personal office—a server that only three people in the world had access to. Himself, his chief financial officer... and Vivian, who had set up his family office trust structure three years ago.
"No..." Adrian muttered, stumbling back against the refrigerator. "No, no, no. She wouldn't. She doesn't have the stomach for this."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the penthouse elevator chimed and slid open.
Four men in dark suits stepped out into the foyer. Leading them was Elena Rostova, the chief legal counsel for Blackwood Capital—a woman known on Wall Street as 'The Executioner.'
Behind her stood two uniformed federal marshals.
"Adrian Vaughn?" Elena asked, her voice cold, precise, and devoid of emotion as she stepped onto the hardwood floor.
Adrian tried to straighten his shoulders, trying to summon the arrogance that had carried him through a hundred boardrooms. "Elena... what is the meaning of this intrusion? This is my private residence!"
Elena opened a leather portfolio and held up a document.
"As of 6:00 AM this morning, Mrs. Vivian Blackwood-Vaughn has filed for an emergency legal separation on the grounds of severe emotional abuse and marital fraud," Elena stated flatly. "Furthermore, as the sixty-percent controlling grantor of the Blackwood Family Living Trust—which holds the primary lease on this penthouse, your company's corporate headquarters building, and the intellectual property patents for Vaughn Dynamics—Mrs. Vaughn has revoked all operating licenses granted to you."

Elena stepped closer, handing him a formal eviction notice.
"You have twenty minutes to gather your personal clothing, Mr. Vaughn," Elena said softly. "The federal marshals are here to escort you off the premises."
