Chapter 5 - The Deposition

Two months later.

Inside the high-rise offices of the Manhattan Federal Courthouse, a formal deposition room was prepped for the final divorce settlement and asset distribution proceedings.

Adrian sat on one side of the long wooden table, wearing a plain, off-the-rack grey suit he had bought from a department store. His face was thin, his eyes hollowed out by months of sleepless nights, anxiety, and public humiliation. Sitting beside him was his court-appointed public defender.

The heavy door opened, and Vivian walked in.

She was eight months pregnant now, her bump prominent, but her presence was imposing, elegant, and entirely commanding. She wore a dark emerald green dress with a gold pendant necklace. Walking beside her was her father, Arthur, and her lead attorney, Elena Rostova.

Vivian sat down across from her ex-husband. She didn't offer a polite smile. She didn't look at him with anger. She looked at him with the cold, absolute detachment of a judge reviewing a finished case file.

"Good morning, Mr. Vaughn," Elena Rostova opened, setting a thick blue folder onto the table. "We are here to finalize the terms of the dissolution of marriage, as well as the surrender of all remaining parental claims regarding the unborn child."

Adrian flinched as if he had been slapped. "Parental claims? Vivian... no. You can't take my son away from me!"

Vivian leaned forward slightly, resting her forearms on the table, her golden eyes locking onto his.

"My son will not be raised by a man who uses human beings as collateral, Adrian," Vivian said softly, her voice steady and clear. "He will not grow up watching a father who believes cruelty is a demonstration of strength."

"I made a mistake!" Adrian pleaded, leaning across the table, his hands trembling. "I was under immense pressure that night! Meridian Capital was threatening to walk away! I was stressed! I lost my temper for five seconds!"

"You didn't lose your temper, Adrian," Vivian corrected him smoothly. "You calculated that humiliating me in front of those investors would prove you were the absolute master of your household. You thought it showed dominance. You thought I was too weak, too afraid, and too dependent on your status to ever fight back."

She reached into her folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper, sliding it across the table to him.

"What is this?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking.

"It is an irrevocable waiver of parental rights," Elena Rostova explained. "In exchange for signing this document, Blackwood Capital will settle your outstanding personal debt of fourteen million dollars to the secondary creditors, preventing them from filing involuntary bankruptcy proceedings against you that would carry mandatory prison time."

Adrian stared at the paper. His hands shook so violently he could barely read the print.

"You're... you're buying my son from me?" Adrian whispered, tears of horror welling in his eyes.

"No, Adrian," Vivian said, her tone as cold as winter rain. "I am giving you a choice. You can sign that paper, walk out of here free of personal debt, and spend the next ten years working to rebuild your life as a common salesman. Or you can refuse to sign, and my father’s legal team will ensure you are indicted on sixteen counts of federal wire fraud by Friday morning."

She tapped her fingers gently on the table.

"You always loved making strategic trades, Adrian," Vivian whispered. "Make this one."

Adrian looked at the paper. Then he looked at Arthur Blackwood, who was standing behind Vivian, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent. Then he looked at Vivian—radiant, powerful, protected by an iron dynasty that he could never break.

Slowly, with a trembling hand, Adrian picked up a pen.

He signed his name on the dotted line.
