Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Coronado

The beach house in Coronado was a modest two-story property overlooking the gray, churning waters of the bay. It had belonged to Claire’s late grandmother before Everett quietly acquired it during their marriage. It was secluded, surrounded by wind-swept palms and high stone walls.

Claire arrived just before dawn. She dragged her bags into the dark living room and immediately set up a makeshift command center on the dining table. She laid out the contents of the blue folder: the Swiss medical diagnostics, the microdeletion reports, and the preliminary 0.00% paternity match document.

She knew she couldn't just throw these papers at Everett’s face in a private room. A man like Everett Whitman, with millions at his disposal and a ruthless team of PR handlers, would simply buy off the doctors, claim the documents were forged, and destroy her credibility.

If she wanted to break him, she had to strike at his altar: public perception.

At 9:00 AM, her phone rang. It was Victoria Vance, San Diego’s most formidable family law attorney. Victoria was known in high-society circles as "The Viper"—a woman who specialized in dismantling arrogant, ultra-wealthy men in divorce court.

"Claire," Victoria’s sharp voice cut through the receiver. "I received the draft of the settlement agreement sent by Everett’s legal team. It’s an insult. A paltry cash payout, the Coronado house, and a strict non-disclosure agreement that forbids you from speaking about your marriage or fertility struggles ever again."

Claire stared out the window at the crashing waves. "I haven't signed anything, Victoria. And I won't."

"Good," Victoria replied. "Because if we go to court, we can fight for a fifty-fifty split of Whitman Coastal Properties. But it will be a long, dirty war. Everett’s lawyers are already leaking subtle stories to the press, painting you as an emotionally unstable wife who couldn't accept the end of a marriage."

"Let them talk," Claire said, her voice eerily calm. "Victoria, I need you to come to Coronado. I have documents you need to see. But this isn't going to be settled in a quiet family court judge's chambers."

"What do you mean?"

"Everett ruined ten years of my life. He let me suffer physically and mentally to cover up his own secret. I don't just want a financial settlement, Victoria. I want his complete, undisputed public ruin."

Thirty minutes later, Victoria arrived at the Coronado house. The sharp-suited attorney sat across from Claire, adjusting her gold-rimmed glasses as she read through the contents of the blue folder.

As Victoria flipped through the Swiss medical reports, her professional composure cracked. Her eyes widened.

"My God," Victoria whispered, looking up at Claire. "He knew? He let you go through five years of invasive fertility treatments knowing he couldn't produce sperm?"

"He knew before we even started," Claire said evenly.

"And this..." Victoria tapped the DNA paternity report showing 0.00% probability. "He knows Tiffany’s baby isn't his, yet he’s publicly declaring the child as his biological heir to save his reputation?"

"Yes."

Victoria leaned back, a dark, calculated smile spreading across her face. "This isn't just a divorce case anymore, Claire. This is fraud, emotional abuse, and extreme malice. If this hits the public domain, Whitman Coastal Properties' stock will plummet, his board will force him out, and his conservative European investors will pull their backing immediately."

"It gets better," Claire said. "Everett is hosting the Whitman Foundation Grand Gala in Chicago in three weeks. The entire elite of Midwest society will be there, along with his international investors and major news outlets. He plans to use the gala to introduce Tiffany as his future wife and publicly present their 'unborn heir' to the world."

Victoria’s eyes gleamed with fierce intelligence. "You want to drop the bomb at the gala."

"I want to make sure everyone in that ballroom sees the truth," Claire said. "But to make it ironclad, I need two things. First, I need a certified, legal DNA match proving who the real father of Tiffany’s baby is. Second, I need a media pipeline that he can't buy off."

Victoria tapped her pen on the table. "Getting the real father’s DNA will be tricky. Do you suspect anyone?"

Claire thought back to the past six months. She remembered Tiffany’s sudden rise at Whitman Coastal Properties, her frequent late-night 'strategy sessions,' and the way she interacted with Everett’s inner circle.

"Tiffany didn't pull this off alone," Claire said thoughtfully. "She’s ambitious, but she’s not stupid enough to get pregnant by a random stranger while trying to trap a billionaire. The real father is someone inside Everett’s orbit. Someone close enough to keep the secret—or someone using Tiffany to take Everett down from the inside."

Victoria stood up, buttoning her blazer. "I have a top-tier private investigator on retainer. Ex-FBI. He can dig into Tiffany’s communications, financial records, and personal travel over the last nine months. If she slept with someone else, he will find out who it is."

"Do it," Claire said. "And Victoria?"

"Yes?"

"Tell your investigator to look closely at Marcus Vance."

Victoria froze. Marcus Vance—no relation to Victoria—was Everett’s Chief Operating Officer, his closest lieutenant, and the man poised to take over the company if Everett ever stepped down.

"Marcus?" Victoria asked, surprised. "He’s been Everett’s right-hand man for a decade."

"Exactly," Claire said softly. "And Marcus has been waiting in Everett’s shadow for just as long. If Marcus put a baby inside Everett’s mistress, he isn't just sleeping with her—he’s positioning his own bloodline to inherit Everett’s empire."

Victoria took a slow breath, nodding in deep appreciation. "Claire... you aren't just surviving this. You’re playing grandmaster chess."

"I learned from the worst," Claire replied.
