Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

A collective gasp swept through the room like a cold wind.

Claire looked radiant. The ice-silver gown clung to her poised frame, catching the light of the chandeliers. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing her long neck and high cheekbones. She walked with a calm, unhurried grace, her eyes fixed directly on the stage.

The whispers began instantly.

"Is that Claire?"

"Everett’s ex-wife?"

"What is she doing here? She looks incredible..."

"I thought he said she was undergoing treatment in a psychiatric facility?"

Everett’s smile instantly vanished, replaced by a dark, furious scowl. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edges of the podium.

Tiffany gasped, taking a step back on stage, her hand reflexively flying to her stomach. Marcus Vance froze at the base of the stage, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the sleek black velvet folder Claire was holding in her right hand.

Everett quickly grabbed the microphone, trying to regain control before the live cameras.

"Security," Everett barked into the mic, his voice laced with venom. "Escort this woman out immediately. She is trespassing."

Two large security guards in suits moved toward Claire from the side aisles. But before they could reach her, Victoria Vance stepped out from behind a marble column, holding a bright yellow legal envelope. She intercepted the head of security, thrusting a legal document into his chest.

"Touch her and you’ll be named in a multi-million-dollar federal lawsuit for physical assault and obstructing the service of an active judicial subpoena," Victoria declared loudly, her sharp attorney voice cutting through the hushed room. "We are serving Mr. Whitman with formal court documents regarding corporate fraud and marital asset concealment."

The security guards hesitated, looking at each other nervously. They knew Victoria Vance’s reputation. They stepped back.

Claire continued walking down the center aisle, the crowd naturally parting for her like the Red Sea. She stopped right at the base of the stage, looking up at Everett.

"Hello, Everett," Claire said. Her voice wasn't yelled; it was delivered with a quiet, icy clarity that carried through the silent ballroom.

Everett stepped to the edge of the stage, leaning down, his face red with anger. "Claire, you have lost your mind," he hissed under his breath. "Get out of here before I ruin you completely. Don't make a scene in front of my investors."

"You already ruined me, Everett," Claire said calmly. "Or at least, you tried to. For ten years, you let me carry the shame of being the 'barren' wife. You let your family mock me. You let me inject chemicals into my body for five years, weeping over every failed pregnancy."

The crowd gasped. The European investors leaned forward, their eyebrows raised in shock. The live-stream cameras zoomed in on Claire’s face.

"Claire, stop it!" Tiffany shrieked from the stage, her voice cracking. "You’re just jealous because Everett moved on with a fertile woman! You couldn't give him a child, so now you want to ruin his happiest moment!"

Claire turned her head slowly to look at Tiffany. Her gaze was pitying.

"Tiffany," Claire said softly. "You really think you played your cards so well, don't you?"

Claire lifted the black velvet folder and opened it. She pulled out the first document—the Swiss medical report—and held it up toward the main media camera hovering near the stage.

"Seven years ago," Claire announced to the entire ballroom, "Everett Whitman was diagnosed by top urology specialists in Bern, Switzerland, with severe genetic azoospermia. He produces zero viable sperm. His condition is absolute, permanent, and incurable."

A massive wave of shocked murmurs rippled through the five hundred guests.

Everett’s face drained of all color. He staggered back half a step, dropping his microphone. It hit the wooden floor of the stage with a loud, ringing screech.

"That's... that's a lie! It’s a forgery!" Everett stammered, his voice trembling violently as he scrambled to pick up the mic. "She’s lying! She’s crazy!"

"It’s certified by Dr. Jean-Luc Bernard of the Bern Medical Institute, Everett," Claire replied, her voice ringing out like a judgment. "And if that isn't enough... let’s talk about the private DNA test you secretly ordered two weeks ago."
