Chapter 5 - The Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom of the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago was a palace of crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and polished marble. Over five hundred guests—billionaires, real estate moguls, politicians, and socialites—milled about, sipping vintage champagne while a string quartet played softly in the background.
At the center of the room stood Everett Whitman.
He looked immaculate in a bespoke tuxedo, his silver hair neatly styled, holding a crystal glass of scotch. Standing beside him, glowing under the flashbulbs of society photographers, was Tiffany. She wore an opulent, tight-fitting emerald green gown designed to accentuate her pregnant belly.
On Everett’s other side stood Marcus Vance, chatting smoothly with a pair of European investment bankers who had flown in from Zurich to finalize a three-billion-dollar merger with Whitman Coastal Properties.
"Everett, my friend," one of the Swiss bankers said, raising his glass. "Congratulations on both fronts. The expansion into European commercial real estate and, of course, the upcoming addition to your family. An heir to carry on the Whitman name."
Everett puffed out his chest, a self-satisfied smile spreading across his face. "Thank you, Henri. Legacy is everything. A man can build buildings, but if he doesn't have a son to pass them to, what was it all for?"
Tiffany beamed, resting her hand over her belly, casting a glowing look up at Everett. Marcus stepped forward, clinking his glass against Everett’s.
"To the future of Whitman Coastal Properties," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes flashing with a hidden, predatory satisfaction. "And to the next generation."
"To the future," Everett echoed, drinking deeply.
In Everett’s mind, everything was playing out perfectly. He had erased Claire from his life. He had convinced the world that his ex-wife was the broken link in his marriage. He had secured a stunning young mistress, an unborn son to secure his legacy, and a multi-billion-dollar international deal. He felt invincible.
At 8:00 PM, the master of ceremonies took the stage, tapping the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the announcer’s voice boomed over the high-tech sound system. "Please welcome the Chairman and CEO of Whitman Coastal Properties, Mr. Everett Whitman!"
The ballroom erupted into applause. Everett handed his scotch glass to a waiter, took Tiffany by the hand, and began walking toward the grand staircase leading to the stage. Camera shutters clicked rapidly; the live stream feed broadcasted his image to thousands of viewers online.
Everett mounted the stage, standing behind the clear acrylic podium decorated with the Whitman corporate crest. Tiffany stood gracefully to his right, her hand cradling her stomach. Marcus stood at the base of the stage, watching like a proud second-in-command.
"Thank you, everyone," Everett began, his voice echoing authoritatively through the ballroom. "Tonight is not just a celebration of our company’s record-breaking financial year. Tonight is a celebration of continuation. For years, people have asked me what drives a man to build an empire. The answer is simple: family."
He turned, looking at Tiffany with a practiced, romantic gaze.
"Tonight, I am proud to formally announce my engagement to Miss Tiffany Blake," Everett declared.
The crowd cheered warmly.
"And beyond that," Everett continued, his voice rising with dramatic flourish, "I am thrilled to announce that early next year, Tiffany will give birth to my biological son and heir—the future of the Whitman legacy!"
The room erupted into thunderous applause once more. Tiffany wiped away a delicate tear for the cameras.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom swung open.

The loud clatter echoed through the hall, cutting through the applause. Guests turned their heads toward the entrance.
Walking into the ballroom, completely alone, was Claire Whitman.
