Chapter 3 - The Shadow Empire

Over the next two weeks, the coastal fog seemed to envelop the Coronado house, hiding Claire’s preparations from the world. While Everett was busy in Chicago, flooding real estate blogs and local society papers with news of his pending divorce and his glowing new romance with Tiffany, Claire worked twelve hours a day with Victoria’s investigator, a grizzled man named Frank Miller.
Frank sat in Claire’s living room, spreading out surveillance photos and financial spreadsheets across the table.
"You hit the bullseye, Mrs. Whitman," Frank said, pushing a photograph toward her.
The image showed a high-end boutique hotel in Miami. Coming out of the side entrance was Tiffany Blake, wearing dark sunglasses. Standing right behind her, adjusting his tie, was Marcus Vance.
"This was taken six months ago," Frank explained. "During the real estate summit in Florida. Everett was in London negotiating a hotel deal. Marcus and Tiffany stayed in the penthouse suite for three days under assumed names. I managed to track the hotel’s valet records and room service charges—paid for using a shell company credit card registered to Marcus."
Claire stared at the photograph. Marcus Vance was forty-two, polished, handsome, and fiercely ambitious. He had always treated Claire with polite, quiet respect at company dinners, often subtly questioning Everett’s reckless expansion plans.
"Did you manage to get a DNA sample from Marcus?" Claire asked.
Frank smiled grimly. He pulled out a sealed plastic bag containing a discarded acrylic coffee cup. " snagged this from Marcus’s private trash bin outside his gym in downtown Chicago two days ago. We rushed it to an independent lab alongside the amniocentesis genetic profile we quietly subpoenaed from Tiffany’s prenatal clinic using a court order related to the divorce asset division."
"And?"
Frank pushed a single sheet of paper across the table.
DNA PATERNITY ANALYSIS:
ALLEGED FATHER: Marcus Vance
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.98%
Claire closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting the truth wash over her.
Marcus Vance was the father. Tiffany was carrying Marcus’s child.
The brilliant, twisted plot laid itself out completely before Claire’s eyes. Marcus and Tiffany had engineered the ultimate corporate takeover. They knew Everett was desperate for an heir—a weakness Marcus likely discovered years ago through company medical insurance records or private conversations. They orchestrated Tiffany’s pregnancy, knowing Everett’s supreme hubris would compel him to claim the child as his own rather than admit his sterility to the world.
Once Everett legally named the child his heir and married Tiffany, Marcus and Tiffany would hold total leverage over him. And if Everett ever died or was forced out, Marcus’s biological child—and Tiffany, as the widow—would inherit control of the multi-billion-dollar Whitman empire.
They weren't just tricking Everett; they were quietly stealing his entire life’s work right out from under him. And Everett, blinded by his own toxic pride and hatred for Claire, was walking straight into their trap, completely unaware that he was parading his rival’s child as his crown jewel.
"This is poetic," Frank muttered, shaking his head in disbelief. "The man is so arrogant he’s actively helping his enemy rob him."
"Does Marcus know that Everett ran a private paternity test?" Claire asked.
"No," Frank replied. "Everett ran that test in secret through a private Swiss lab because he’s paranoid. But Everett suppressed the 0.00% result because he couldn't handle the public humiliation of being exposed as sterile. He decided to swallow the lie and raise the kid anyway, believing he could keep the secret buried forever."
"He thought he could bury me, too," Claire said softly. She looked at the clock on the wall. "The Chicago Gala is in four days."
"What’s your plan, Claire?" Frank asked, looking at her with genuine respect. "If we release this to the press now, Everett’s PR team will spin it. They’ll issue denials, claim the DNA tests were compromised, and buy time."
Claire stood up and walked to the window. Outside, the rain had finally stopped, revealing a clear, cold sky over the ocean.
"We don't go to the press beforehand," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of calm, lethal authority. "Everett wants a spectacle. He wants to stand on stage in front of five hundred of the most influential people in America, announce his heir, and show the world that he replaced me with a younger, fertile woman."

She turned back to Frank, a cool smile gracing her lips.
"We are going to give him the spectacle he deserves."
