Chapter 1 - The Envelope on the Table

The crystal chandeliers of the downtown Chicago ballroom seemed to hum with a tense, oppressive static. Every eye in the room was locked on the thick manila envelope Olivia Carter had just placed on the mahogany reception table.

Beside it, the four identical strollers sat in a neat row, their tiny occupants—Liam, Noah, Ava, and Grace—still sleeping peacefully despite the sudden, deafening hush that had fallen over two hundred elite guests.

Ethan Walker’s face had drained of all color. The polished, untouchable millionaire real estate mogul who had spent months orchestrating a pristine public image now looked like a man standing on the edge of a collapsing cliff. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. His custom tailored black tuxedo suddenly looked too tight, restricting his breath.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa Reed hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of furious panic and sheer embarrassment. She gripped Ethan’s arm so tightly her manicured nails dug right through the fabric. "Ethan, do something! Call security! Throw her and those filthy things out of here right now!"

"Don't you dare touch them, Vanessa," Olivia said, her voice quiet, steady, and terrifyingly calm.

She did not raise her voice, yet every syllable carried across the expansive hall, commanding the attention of every wedding guest, investor, and business partner in attendance.

Ethan slowly turned his head away from Vanessa, his eyes fixed on Olivia with a look of absolute horror. The echoes of his own past words—the cold dismissal he had delivered nine months ago when he walked out of their home—came rushing back to haunt him. “I need freedom, Olivia. Our lives are too complicated.”

Now, looking at the four tiny infants who shared his exact jawline, his sharp eyes, and his stubborn brow, the "complications" had arrived in quadruplicate.

"Olivia... let's not do this here," Ethan stammered, taking a hesitant step forward down the carpeted altar steps. His voice had lost all its corporate authority. "We can talk about this privately. In my office. Or... or at a lawyer's conference room. Name your terms. Whatever financial settlement you want—double it, triple it—just take the children and leave before..."

"Before what, Ethan?" Olivia interrupted, a cold, sharp smile touching her lips. "Before your precious real estate partners realize that the man who built his empire on the foundation of 'family values' and 'trust' is a fraud who abandoned his pregnant wife and denied his own flesh and blood?"

A sharp murmur rippled through the front rows of the audience. Several of Ethan’s primary venture capitalists—men who had flown in from New York and San Francisco specifically for this high-society wedding—began whispering anxiously among themselves.

Vanessa’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. She stepped in front of Ethan, glaring daggers at Olivia. "You think you can come in here with a few rented babies and ruin our special day?!" she shrieked, losing whatever poise she had left. "Everyone knows you were barren! Everyone knows you couldn't give him children, which is why he left you!"

Olivia didn't blink. She slowly reached into the manila envelope and pulled out the first document. It was a formal, certified medical report from Chicago Memorial Hospital, complete with birth certificates, DNA genetic profiles, and hospital footprints.

"Barren, Vanessa?" Olivia asked smoothly, holding the paper up for the front rows to see. "Is that what Ethan told you? Or did he just forget to mention that the day he walked out to move into your luxury penthouse, I was already twelve weeks pregnant with his quadruplets?"
