Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Truth

Three days after the aborted wedding, the front pages of every major newspaper and financial journal in the country bore the same headline: MILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE FRAUD: ETHAN WALKER’S WEDDING RUINED BY ABANDONED WIFE AND QUADRUPLETS.

Inside a sunlit, peaceful apartment on the north side of Chicago, Olivia sat on a comfortable cream sofa, nursing little Grace while Liam, Noah, and Ava slept in their cribs in the adjacent nursery.

The apartment was modest compared to the sprawling suburban mansion she had once shared with Ethan, but it was filled with something infinitely more valuable: peace, safety, and genuine love.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Olivia set Grace down gently in her baby rocker, walking over to unlock the heavy wooden door. Standing on the porch was Sarah Chen—her former college roommate and a brilliant senior partner at one of Chicago’s top family law firms.

"You look exhausted, Liv," Sarah said with a warm, empathetic smile, stepping inside and holding up two cups of artisanal coffee and a bag of pastries. "But you also look like a woman who just won the Super Bowl."

"Exhausted is an understatement," Olivia sighed, taking the coffee gratefully as they sat down at the kitchen counter. "Between feedings every three hours and dealing with the federal prosecutors, I haven't slept more than two consecutive hours in a week."

"Well, your sleep schedule is about to get a little crazier," Sarah said, pulling a thick stack of legal briefs from her briefcase. "The financial audit is complete. Ethan’s shell company accounts have been fully frozen by the federal court. Because of the fraudulent asset concealment we uncovered, the judge granted an immediate emergency asset seizure. Every single dollar Ethan tried to hide is now under court receivership."

Olivia took a sip of her coffee, looking out the window at the quiet, tree-lined street. "And Vanessa?"

"Vanessa’s personal bank accounts were seized yesterday morning," Sarah chuckled darkly. "Her designer clothes, her luxury car, and her penthouse lease are all tied to Ethan’s corporate credit lines. As of yesterday afternoon, she’s facing criminal charges for conspiracy to commit financial fraud and perjury."

"Did Ethan try to reach out?" Olivia asked quietly.

"His defense attorney called me three times this morning," Sarah replied, tossing her pen onto the counter. "Ethan wants a plea deal. He’s offering a lump sum settlement, full ownership of the real estate holdings, and an apology letter, provided you sign a non-disclosure agreement and drop the criminal child abandonment charges."

Olivia stood up, walking over to the window where the afternoon sun warmed the hardwood floor. She thought back to the lonely nights of her pregnancy—when she sat in an empty room, crying into her pillow while her body ached, wondering how she would pay for the next box of diapers or the next doctor's appointment while Ethan dined in five-star restaurants with Vanessa.

She turned around, looking Sarah straight in the eye.

"Tell his lawyer no," Olivia said firmly. "I don't want his apology. And I don't want his hush money."

"Liv, are you sure?" Sarah cautioned. "A trial could take months, and—"

"I want every single document, every text message, and every financial record entered into public court record," Olivia interrupted, her voice steady and resolute. "Let the world see the truth. Let every young woman who trusted him know exactly who he is. We are going all the way to trial, Sarah."
