Chapter 2 - The Collapse of a Empire

The silence that followed was broken only by the soft, sweet coo of little Ava waking up in her stroller.

Ethan staggered backward, catching his hip against the edge of the altar table. He reached out to grab the microphone connected to the DJ system, but before his fingers could touch it, Marcus Vance—Ethan’s senior managing partner and the primary investor in Walker Real Estate Group—stood up from the center aisle.

"Ethan," Marcus’s voice cut through the ballroom like ice. "Is this true?"

"Marcus, please, don't listen to her—" Ethan pleaded, rushing down the steps. "She’s unstable! She fabricated these documents! She’s trying to extort me!"

"Fabricated?"

A sharp, clear voice echoed from the side entrance of the ballroom.

Everyone turned to see Detective Miller of the Chicago Police Department walking in, flanked by two uniformed officers and a civilian carrying a heavy laptop bag.

Vanessa gasped, stumbling back into the wedding cake display. "Police? Why are the police here?!"

Detective Miller walked straight up to Ethan, flashing a formal court-signed document. "Ethan Walker, you are being served with an emergency federal injunction and civil subpoena regarding interstate wire fraud, concealment of marital assets, and fraudulent child abandonment."

The entire room erupted into chaos. Cameras flashed from the back of the room as paparazzi—tipped off hours earlier by an anonymous whistleblower who had discovered the court filings—poured through the service doors.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Ethan shouted, his face purple with rage. "You can't do this! I am a major taxpayer! I have immunity from—"

"Immunity doesn't cover hiding twenty million dollars in offshore shell accounts to avoid child support obligations during a pending divorce proceeding," Detective Miller replied calmly, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Ethan’s wrists before he could protest another word.

Olivia stood beside the strollers, her hands resting gently on Noah’s blanket. She watched the man who had discarded her like trash now being dragged down the aisle in his bespoke tuxedo, his head bowed in utter humiliation.

Vanessa screamed, running after the officers. "Ethan! Don't let them take you! Tell them who we are!"

One of the officers gently pushed Vanessa back. "Ma'am, step away from the suspect. And I suggest you contact your own attorney; our financial crimes division has uncovered your direct involvement in transferring those embezzled funds into your personal bank accounts."

Vanessa froze mid-step. Her high-heel shoes wobbled on the polished wood floor. She turned her head slowly toward Olivia, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization.

"You..." Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking. "You planned all of this."

Olivia looked down at her four sleeping children, then raised her eyes to meet Vanessa's shattered gaze.

"No, Vanessa," Olivia said softly, adjusting Liam's blue blanket. "I didn't plan for you to destroy my marriage. I didn't plan for you to lie to everyone in this room. All I did... was wait for the truth to catch up with you."
