Chapter 4 - The Corporate Coup
While Ethan sat in a federal holding facility awaiting his arraignment, the board of directors of Walker Real Estate Group held an emergency session on the fiftieth floor of their downtown skyscraper.
The atmosphere in the glass-walled boardroom was toxic.
Marcus Vance stood at the head of the mahogany table, slamming a thick financial audit report down onto the glass surface.
"Our stock dropped forty-two percent in forty-eight hours!" Marcus shouted at the terrified vice presidents sitting around him. "Institutional investors are pulling out by the billions! Our commercial loans are being recalled by the banks because Ethan used company capital to fund his personal lifestyle and cover up his divorce fraud!"
"Can we issue a press statement distancing the firm from Ethan?" suggested David Thorne, the chief financial officer, his face pale with panic. "Blame it all on his personal misconduct?"
"You can't distance the firm when Ethan holds seventy percent of the voting shares and his name is literally on the building!" Marcus snapped. "Unless... unless those shares are transferred under emergency probate and family court receivership."
Just as Marcus spoke those words, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
In walked Sarah Chen, followed by two federal court bailiffs and Olivia Carter.
Olivia wore a sharp, tailored navy-blue pantsuit. Her posture was immaculate, her eyes sharp and clear. She did not look like the desperate, abandoned pregnant woman Ethan had left behind nine months ago; she looked like a corporate titan stepping onto the battlefield.
The board members stared in stunned silence.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Olivia said calmly, walking to the head of the table and taking the empty leather chair directly opposite Marcus Vance.
"Mrs... Mrs. Carter," Marcus stammered, adjusting his tie. "What are you doing here? This is a private corporate board meeting."
"It was a private board meeting," Olivia corrected, sliding a certified document across the table. "Until the Federal Bankruptcy and Family Court issued a temporary receivership order transferring seventy percent of Ethan Walker's voting shares to me as primary custodial trustee of his four legitimate heirs."
David Thorne gasped, grabbing the paper. "That's... that's a controlling majority stake! You own the company?!"
"As of eight o'clock this morning," Olivia replied smoothly. "Which means I am your new chairperson and majority owner."
Marcus stared at Olivia, recognizing the fierce intelligence and quiet discipline that Ethan had foolishly underestimated for years. "What do you plan to do with the company, Olivia?"
"First, we are going to audit every single department to purge the corruption Ethan and Vanessa installed," Olivia said, standing up and placing both hands on the table. "Second, we are going to issue a public apology to our tenants, investors, and employees. And third..."
