Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The immediate aftermath of the gala was a media hurricane.
Within two hours, every news network in the country was broadcasting the story: CHICAGO TYCOON’S WIFE ARRESTED FOR CHILD TRAFFICKING; SECRET TRIPLETS EXPOSED AT FOUNDATION GALA.
Emma didn't stay to watch the news.
While the police processed the crime scene and interviewed witnesses, Emma brought the children to a quiet, secure penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago—a sanctuary provided by Vance Legal & Investigative Services, the firm that had helped her build the black file over the past eight months.
Inside the quiet apartment, the chaos of the evening faded into the background.
Leo, Ethan, and Lily sat on the oversized velvet sofa, eating warm chicken soup and drinking milk. Despite the crazy night, the three children were remarkably resilient. For eight months, Emma had slowly introduced Ethan and Lily to Leo, carefully building their bond in secret before launching the public strike against the Mercers. They knew they were siblings. They knew Emma was their mother.
A soft knock sounded at the penthouse door.
Marcus Vance—a tall, grey-haired former federal prosecutor who now ran the city’s top corporate intelligence firm—opened the door.
Grant Mercer stood in the hallway.
He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket. His tie was undone, his white shirt rumpled, his face pale and hollowed out by grief and exhaustion. He held a small leather box in his hands.
“Marcus,” Grant rasped. “Please. Just ten minutes.”
Marcus looked back at Emma, who was standing near the kitchen island. Emma gave a single, quiet nod.
Marcus stepped aside, allowing Grant to enter the penthouse, before closing the door and waiting outside in the hallway.
Grant walked into the living room as if walking through a field of landmines. He stopped ten feet away from the sofa where his three children sat.
Leo looked up from his soup. “It’s him,” he whispered to Ethan.
Grant looked at Emma. “I’ve spent the last three hours at the police station,” he said, his voice raw. “Sloane... her uncle confessed. They faked the test. They bribed the hospital staff. They kept Ethan and Lily in a private house in Evanston, planning to secretly adopt them out to a family in Europe next month.”
Emma didn't speak. She crossed her arms, watching him.
“I called the board,” Grant continued, his hands shaking. “I resigned as CEO of Mercer Urban Holdings effective immediately. I transferred fifty-one percent of my personal shares into a blind trust for the three children.”
“Do you think money fixes this, Grant?” Emma asked quietly.
“No!” Grant cried out, taking a step forward before stopping himself. “No, Emma! Nothing fixes this! I ruined your life! I let them steal our children! I was an arrogant, blind fool who traded the best thing that ever happened to me for a corporate empire!”
He dropped to his knees on the wooden floor, bowing his head before her.
“I don't expect you to forgive me,” Grant wept quietly. “I don't expect you to ever look at me without disgust. But please... let me be their father. Let me help you give them everything they were denied.”
Emma looked down at the man who had once been her world—the man who had loved her in small apartments before he became rich, the man who had abandoned her when the bright lights of power blinded him, and the man who was now broken at her feet.
She walked over and stood before him.
“Getting your forgiveness isn't going to be an easy check you can sign, Grant,” Emma said softly, but firmly. “You broke my heart five years ago. But worse than that... you made these children live without a father for five years.”
She reached down, taking the small leather box from his trembling hands. She opened it. Inside were three small, antique gold lockets—the ones Grant’s grandmother had left for his future children.

“If you want to be in their lives, Grant,” Emma said, looking into his bloodshot gray eyes, “you start from zero. No corporate power. No nanny teams. You show up every day. You earn their trust. And you help me bring down every single person who helped Sloane steal them.”
Grant looked up, tears slipping down his face, and gave a fierce, desperate nod. “I will. I swear to God, Emma, I will.”
