Chapter 8 - The Proposal

That evening, after the grand opening gala had ended and the city lights began to twinkle across Lake Michigan, Grant brought Emma to a quiet private terrace at the top of the new Maternal Health Center.
The night air was cool, but a glass fire pit burned warmly on the patio. Below them, the waters of the lake reflected the amber glow of the city skyline.
The three children were fast asleep downstairs in the center’s private family suite, exhausted after a long day of cutting ribbons and eating cupcakes.
Emma leaned against the stone balcony railing, sipping a glass of warm spiced cider.
Grant stepped up behind her, wrapping a soft black cashmere shawl around her shoulders against the breeze.
“They’re fast asleep,” Grant smiled, resting his chin on her shoulder. “Leo fell asleep holding his golden ribbon piece.”
Emma laughed softly. “He takes his job as official ribbon-cutter very seriously.”
They stood in comfortable silence for a long time, watching the boats glide across the dark water.
“Emma?” Grant murmured softly.
“Hmm?”
Grant stepped around her, taking her warm hands into his. His gray eyes were intense, deep, and steady.
He slowly dropped onto one knee on the stone terrace floor.
Emma gasped softly, her hand moving to her lips.
Grant pulled a velvet box from his coat pocket and opened it. Inside sat a breathtaking ring—a flawless, brilliant-cut oval diamond set in a simple, delicate band of warm rose gold.
“Five years ago, I threw away the greatest blessing God ever gave me,” Grant said, his voice thick with deep, genuine emotion. “I spent five years in the dark, thinking I had everything, when I actually had nothing.”
He looked up into her eyes, tears reflecting the amber firelight.
“You taught me what it means to be a real man, Emma. You taught me how to fight for truth, how to be a real father, and how to love without pride. I know I don't deserve you. But I swear on my life, every single day for the rest of my years, I will spend every breath making sure you and our children feel safe, cherished, and loved.”
He took a breath, holding the ring toward her.
“Emma Calloway... will you marry me? Will you make me the happiest, luckiest man alive and be my wife?”
Tears spilled over Emma’s lashes—not tears of pain or sorrow, but tears of deep, healing joy. She looked at the ring, then down at the man who had fought so hard to earn his way back into her heart.

“Yes,” Emma whispered, her voice breaking into a joyful laugh. “Yes, Grant! A thousand times yes!”
Grant stood up, slipping the diamond ring onto her finger, and pulled her into a fierce, lifting embrace. He spun her around on the terrace under the starlit sky as his lips found hers in a deep, passionate kiss that washed away every remaining shadow of the past.
