Chapter 5 - Earning a Second Chance

The corporate battle was won, but the real war—the battle for three small hearts—was just beginning.
For the next two months, Grant lived in a modest townhouse three blocks away from Emma’s penthouse. He didn't use corporate drivers. He didn't hire assistants.
Every morning at 7:00 AM, Grant showed up at Emma’s door carrying fresh milk, fruit, and warm pastries.
At first, the children were distant. Leo was protective of his mother, watching Grant’s every move with suspicious gray eyes. Ethan was quiet, preferred reading books in his room. Lily was cautious, staying close to Emma’s side whenever Grant sat on the living room floor.
Grant didn't force them.
He sat on the rug for hours, assembling complex Lego castles while the kids watched from a distance. When Ethan dropped a book, Grant picked it up and read him three chapters without complaining. When Lily had a nightmare at 2:00 AM, Grant stayed awake in the hallway outside her room, playing soft acoustic guitar melodies until she fell back asleep.
One rainy Saturday afternoon, Emma watched from the kitchen as Grant sat on the floor with all three kids.
They were building a massive cardboard fort out of refrigerator boxes. Grant had smudge marks of brown marker on his nose and glitter stuck to his dark hair.
“No, Daddy!” Leo giggled, grabbing a plastic tape dispenser. “The roof goes on top!”
Daddy.
The word slipped out of Leo’s mouth naturally, without hesitation.
Grant froze. The piece of cardboard in his hand trembled. He looked up at Leo, his gray eyes filling with instant tears.
“The roof... goes on top?” Grant whispered, his voice shaking.
“Yeah!” Leo smiled, handing him a strip of tape. “Otherwise the rain gets in!”
Grant swallowed hard, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand, and gave the boy a brilliant, genuine smile. “Right. The roof goes on top. Good catch, captain.”
Emma leaned against the marble kitchen counter, clutching her mug of coffee, feeling a soft, long-forgotten warmth bloom in her chest.
She walked over to the cardboard fort and dropped down onto her knees beside them.
“Room for one more in there?” Emma asked.
Lily squealed with joy, pulling Emma inside the cardboard box. “Mom! Daddy built a secret tunnel!”
Grant looked across the small cardboard space at Emma. Through the dim light filtering through the cutout windows, his eyes were filled with unspoken gratitude, reverence, and love.

“Thank you,” Grant whispered softly, making sure the kids were busy taping the walls. “Thank you for letting me come home.”
“You’re doing the work, Grant,” Emma said softly, reaching out and brushing a speck of glitter from his cheek. “That’s all I ever wanted.”
