Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

While Sloane Whitmore sat in a federal holding cell awaiting trial, her father—rich patriarch Arthur Whitmore—was not about to let the Whitmore family empire crumble without a war.

Three days after the gala, Arthur Whitmore called an emergency meeting of the Mercer Urban Holdings Board of Directors.

The Whitmore family owned thirty percent of the company’s voting stock. Arthur intended to use Grant’s resignation to seize full control of the six-billion-dollar waterfront development project and force the board to fund Sloane’s legal defense fund using corporate reserves.

At 9:00 AM on Thursday, the glass-walled boardroom on the sixty0th floor of Mercer Tower was filled with anxious executives, corporate lawyers, and major investors.

Arthur Whitmore sat at the head of the table, wearing a double-breasted charcoal suit, his face set in a cold, aristocratic scowl.

“Grant Mercer has ruined his reputation and abandoned his post,” Arthur declared, slamming his hand onto the mahogany table. “As the largest institutional shareholder group, the Whitmore Foundation hereby moves to appoint myself as Interim Chief Executive Officer!”

“I object,” a quiet voice called out from the back of the room.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Emma Calloway walked into the room. She was dressed in an immaculate cream-colored tailored suit, her hair tied back in a sleek knot. She didn't look like a disgraced former employee. She looked like an executioner.

Beside her walked Grant Mercer, wearing a dark suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Arthur Whitmore sneered, leaning back in his chair. “Emma Calloway. This is a private board meeting for shareholders. You have no standing here. Security, escort her out.”

“Don't bother, Arthur,” Grant said, stepping up to the side of the table. He pulled a thick sheaf of legal documents from his briefcase and tossed them onto the center of the glass table.

“What is this?” Arthur demanded.

“That is the court order unsealing the Whitmore Foundation’s financial records,” Emma said smoothly, taking a seat at the table without asking. “Three days ago, Grant transferred fifty-one percent of his voting shares into the Calloway-Mercer Triplets Trust. As the sole legal trustee, I now control the majority voting block of Mercer Urban Holdings.”

The board members gasped, murmuring among themselves.

Arthur’s face turned purple. “You can't do that! Grant resigned!”

“He resigned as CEO,” Emma corrected calmly. “He did not forfeit his share equity. And as majority shareholder, my first motion is to strip the Whitmore Foundation of its board seats due to active criminal prosecution for corporate asset stripping.”

She tapped a silver tablet on the table, projecting a series of bank transfers onto the boardroom screen.

“Over the last four years,” Emma explained to the stunned board members, “Arthur Whitmore used his daughter’s marriage to Grant to siphon forty-five million dollars from Mercer Urban Holdings’ construction escrow accounts into offshore shell companies in Grand Cayman. They didn't just steal my children... they were stealing from every investor in this room.”

Pandemonium broke loose in the boardroom. Investors jumped to their feet, shouting questions, while Arthur Whitmore stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.

Grant leaned down over Arthur, his eyes burning with cold rage. “You and your daughter thought you could destroy Emma and steal my kids to control my company,” Grant whispered. “By four o’clock today, the SEC will seize your family’s assets. You’re done, Arthur.”

Two federal marshals stepped into the boardroom, presenting Arthur Whitmore with an arrest warrant for corporate embezzlement and obstruction of justice.

As Arthur was led out of the glass tower in handcuffs, the remaining board members turned toward Emma, their faces filled with newfound respect and fear.

“Miss Calloway,” the senior board member said, swallowing hard. “What are your plans for the company?”

Emma stood up, smoothing her suit jacket. “We build the waterfront project. We build the maternal health centers. And we clean this house until there isn't a single spot of Whitmore dirt left.”
