Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

On Monday morning, the 40th floor of the Cross Meridian Logistics Tower in downtown Boston was bathed in sleek executive luxury.

Damon Cross sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, his eyes bloodshot, his tie loosened. Across from him sat his chief financial officer, Marcus Vance, and four terrified senior vice presidents.

Vivienne Hart stood near the glass wall, nervously chewing her lip, her phone buzzing constantly with calls from corporate HR.

"What do you mean the lease is revoked?" Damon slammed his fist onto the table, shattering a glass water tumbler. "I built this company! I am the CEO!"

"Damon, listen to me!" Marcus Vance pleaded, holding up a stack of legal notices stamped with the red seal of the Vale Family Trust. "Atlantic Horizon locked our corporate accounts at midnight! Our fuel lines for the delivery fleet in New Jersey are shut down! Our drivers can't even fill up their trucks because the corporate Visa cards are bouncing!"

"Call the bank!" Damon roared.

"The bank is the Vale Trust, you idiot!" Marcus shouted back, losing his composure. "Eighty percent of our revolving credit line is underwritten by Harrison Vale's estate! They issued a formal default notice three hours ago! We have sixty-eight hours left to post sixty-four million dollars in liquidity, or the receivers step in!"

Damon sank back into his leather chair, running both hands through his disheveled hair. His mind was spinning in violent circles.

He had calculated everything so carefully. He had assumed Sienna would be broken, overwhelmed by newborn care, isolated at her mother’s modest home in suburban Worcester. He had planned to let her simmer for a week, then send his lawyers with a stingy settlement offer that would secure his corporate credit forever.

Instead, she had vanished into thin air, leaving him stranded at an airport pad, grounded his plane, and frozen his corporate empire in less than forty-eight hours.

"Where is she?" Damon demanded, staring at Marcus. "Where is Sienna?"

"Nobody knows," Marcus whispered. "Her mother claims she hasn't seen her. Her phone goes straight to an encrypted legal voicemail handled by Pendelton & Associates."

Just then, the heavy double glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Four men in sharp charcoal suits stepped into the room, followed by two uniformed officers from the Massachusetts State Police. At the front of the group walked Arthur Pendelton.

Damon stood up, his posture defensive and aggressive. "Arthur! Get the hell out of my boardroom!"

"It isn't your boardroom, Mr. Cross," Arthur said smoothly, pulling a court order from his coat. "This building is owned by Vale Real Estate Holdings. As of 9:00 AM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has granted an emergency injunction freezing all executive operations of Cross Meridian due to suspected corporate asset stripping."

Vivienne gasped, backing away toward the window. "What?"

Arthur looked directly at Vivienne. "Miss Vivienne Hart?"

"Yes?" she squeaked.

"You are hereby served with a formal summons from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office regarding nineteen unauthorized wire transfers from Cross Meridian's payroll account to your personal offshore account in Grand Cayman, totaling 2.4 million dollars."

Damon’s head whipped toward Vivienne, his eyes widening in complete shock. "What wire transfers? Vivienne... what is he talking about?"

Vivienne’s face went pale as milk. "Damon... I... you told me to handle the discretion budget!"

"I told you to manage my calendar!" Damon yelled, his voice cracking. "You stole two million dollars from my company?"

"It wasn't your company, Miss Hart," Arthur interrupted calmly. "It was Miss Vale's money. Officers, please escort Miss Hart to the lobby. The DA’s investigators are waiting downstairs."

As the state troopers placed hand restraints on a sobbing Vivienne and led her out of the room, Damon fell back into his chair as if he had been shot.

"Arthur..." Damon stammered, his voice suddenly small, desperate, and cracking with emotion. "Please... let me talk to Sienna. Let me see my daughter. I made a mistake. I was stressed... I wasn't thinking clearly!"

Arthur gathered his papers, looking down at Damon with cold, unyielding pity.

"Sienna left you a message, Mr. Cross," Arthur said softly.

Damon looked up, hope flickering in his dark eyes. "What? What did she say?"

Arthur pulled out his phone, pressed play on an audio recording, and set it on the table.

Sienna’s voice filled the high-ceilinged boardroom—calm, precise, and completely devoid of warmth.

"Damon. You told me at the airport that our marriage was over, that I was disposable, and that I should go to my mother’s house. I listened to you. Now, you are going to listen to me. By the time you read this notice, Cross Meridian will be gone. Your reputation will be gone. And if you ever come within five hundred feet of my daughter again, I will personally ensure you spend the next ten years in a federal prison. Goodbye, Damon."

The recording clicked off.

Damon stared at the phone as Arthur picked it up and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the billionaire CEO sitting alone in the silence of his crumbling world.
