Chapter 6 - Reckoning at the Gates

Julian Vance stood on the windswept terrace, his dark blue eyes fixed on Sienna with an intensity that made the cool ocean breeze feel suddenly warm.
"I tried to warn you about him six years ago, Sienna," Julian said quietly, his hands tucked into his coat pockets. "When your father died, Damon moved in like a vulture. He knew you were grieving, vulnerable, and alone. He systematically isolated you from everyone who actually cared about Harrison Vale’s legacy."
Sienna looked down at the flagstones. "I was twenty-one, Julian. My father had just died in a helicopter crash, and Damon told me he would handle everything. He made me feel like I was incapable of managing my own life."
"He was a parasite," Julian said fiercely, stepping closer until he was standing right beside her chair. He looked down at Lila, a soft, incredibly gentle expression touching his sharp features. "Is this the little girl who stopped an airline fleet?"
Sienna couldn't help but smile—a genuine, warm smile that reached her eyes for the first time in months. "This is Lila."
Julian crouched down beside the crib, extending one long, calloused finger. Lila’s tiny hand reached out instinctively, her soft fingers wrapping around his thumb. Julian let out a quiet breath, his posture relaxing completely.
"She’s beautiful, Sienna," he whispered. "She looks just like you when you were young."
"You remember what I looked like when I was young?" Sienna asked softly.
Julian raised his eyes to meet hers, his blue gaze steady and unwavering. "I’ve remembered every detail of you every day for six years in Geneva. Leaving Maine was the biggest mistake of my life, Sienna. I let Damon convince me that staying near you would ruin your father's company. I was a coward for walking away."
"You weren't a coward," Sienna said, reaching out to gently touch his shoulder. "Damon used corporate blackmail against your family. Marcus told me years later that Damon threatened to destroy your brother's career if you didn't take the European post."
"That doesn't matter anymore," Julian said, standing up. "What matters is that Cross Meridian is dead, the Vale Trust is back in your hands, and I’m not leaving New England again. Unless... you want me to leave."
Sienna looked into his eyes, sensing the absolute honesty and integrity that had been completely absent from her marriage with Damon.
"I don't want you to leave, Julian," she said softly.
Before Julian could answer, the loud, harsh sound of a car engine roaring up the gravel driveway shattered the peaceful atmosphere of the estate.
Tires squealed near the front steps.
A battered, old silver sedan—a rental car—had run straight past the security gate, slamming into the decorative stone fountain at the center of the driveway.
The driver’s door flew open.
Damon Cross stumbled out onto the gravel. His charcoal overcoat was stained and disheveled, his hair was unkempt, his face flushed red with alcohol and rage. He was holding a crumpled folder of legal papers in one hand.
"Sienna!" Damon bellowed, his slurred voice echoing off the granite walls of the mansion. "Sienna, get out here! You ruined my life! You set me up!"
Mrs. Gable rushed out onto the porch, flanked by two heavy estate security guards. "Mr. Cross! Leave this property immediately or we will have you arrested for trespassing!"
"Get out of my way, old woman!" Damon screamed, trying to push past the guards. "Sienna! You think you can give my company to Julian Vance? You think you can replace me with him?"
Sienna stood up from her chair, her expression turning from quiet peace to absolute, frozen rage. She handed Lila carefully into Mrs. Gable’s arms.
"Take Lila inside, Mary," Sienna commanded softly.
"Sienna, let the guards handle him," Julian said, stepping in front of her.
"No," Sienna said, pushing her hair back over her shoulders, her eyes burning like dark diamonds. "He came to my father's house. It's time he learns who really owns this ground."
She walked down the grand stone steps of the terrace, Julian walking half a pace behind her like a loyal guardian.
When Damon saw Sienna stepping onto the gravel, flanked by Julian, his face contorted in psychotic rage.
"Look at you!" Damon sneered, pointing a trembling finger at them. "I knew it! You were sleeping with him behind my back! That’s why you pulled the aircraft! That’s why you froze my cards!"
Sienna stopped ten feet away from him, her posture completely calm, her head held high.
"Damon," Sienna said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it cut through his drunken rage like a razor. "You are standing on private property. You have violated a court-issued restraining order. And you are currently smelling of cheap bourbon at three o'clock in the afternoon."
"You took everything from me!" Damon sobbed, his anger suddenly dissolving into pathetic self-pity. "My company! My apartment! My reputation! Vivienne is in a federal holding cell pointing fingers at me! I have forty thousand dollars left in my bank account, Sienna! Forty thousand dollars!"
"You had a billion dollars of my father's trust, Damon," Sienna replied flatly. "And you traded it for an assistant's smile, a fake sense of power, and a suitcase full of newborn clothes you took out of spite."
Damon took a frantic step toward her. "Sienna... please. Look at me! We have a daughter together! We can fix this! Tell Arthur to drop the bankruptcy claim! Give me back the lease on the G650! I’ll fire Vivienne! I’ll never see her again! We can be a family!"
Julian stepped forward, his massive frame completely blocking Damon from taking another step toward Sienna.
"If you take one more step toward my wife's daughter, Cross," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, "I won't wait for the state troopers to arrive."
Damon stared at Julian, then looked past him at Sienna. He saw zero pity in her eyes. Zero nostalgia. Zero love.

He was looking at the woman he had tried to break, now standing as the absolute monarch of an empire he could no longer touch.
In the distance, the wail of police sirens began to echo down the coastal highway, rapidly approaching the estate gates.
