Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

Two weeks passed.

The fall of Damon Cross was swift, brutal, and splashed across every financial newspaper from Wall Street to London.

Without the Vale Trust’s backing, Cross Meridian collapsed into chapter eleven bankruptcy within seven days. The board of directors voted unanimously to strip Damon of his CEO title, his stock options were voided to pay off creditor debts, and his luxury penthouse in Boston was seized by Vale Real Estate.

Meanwhile, at the Vale Estate in Maine, the atmosphere was a sanctuary of peace and healing.

Sienna sat on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the ocean, holding Lila, who had gained two pounds and was sleeping comfortably in a pink wool sweater. The color had returned to Sienna’s cheeks, her posture was erect and strong, and the shadow of exhaustion that had haunted her for months was entirely gone.

Arthur Pendelton walked out onto the terrace, holding a fresh tray of coffee and a thick envelope.

"Good morning, Sienna," Arthur said, taking a seat across from her.

"How is the bankruptcy proceeding, Arthur?" Sienna asked, taking a sip of coffee.

"Cross Meridian was sold at auction yesterday afternoon," Arthur reported smoothly. "A clean logistics firm out of Montreal purchased the assets for pennies on the dollar. Every entry-level employee and delivery driver kept their job and pension. Only the executive team was liquidated."

Sienna looked out at the sea. "And Damon?"

"He’s currently living in a rented studio apartment in South Boston," Arthur said. "His bank accounts are frozen pending the District Attorney’s investigation into Vivienne Hart's embezzlement schemes. It turns out Damon signed off on several of those wire transfers without reading them because he was too busy taking Vivienne to luxury resorts in Saint Barthélemy."

Sienna shook her head softly. "He spent six years telling me I was bad with money, while he was letting his mistress drain his corporate accounts under his nose."

"The court has also finalized the emergency custody order," Arthur added, pulling a legal document from the envelope. "You have sole legal and physical custody of Lila. Damon has been granted limited, supervised visitation—two hours every other Sunday at a court-designated facility in Portland, provided he passes a full psychological evaluation."

"Did his lawyers contest it?"

"Damon doesn't have lawyers anymore, Sienna," Arthur replied softly. "His primary defense team withdrew yesterday due to unpaid legal fees."

Just then, Mrs. Gable stepped onto the terrace. "Miss Sienna... there is a man at the main gate. He refuses to leave. He says he needs five minutes with you."

Sienna’s eyes darkened slightly. "Is it Damon?"

"No," Mrs. Gable shook her head. "It’s Mr. Julian Vance."

Sienna froze.

Julian Vance.

He was the elder brother of Marcus Vance, Damon's former CFO. But more importantly, Julian had been Sienna’s late father’s chief operational officer ten years ago—and the man Sienna had been secretly engaged to before Damon Cross entered her life and systematically drove a wedge between them.

Arthur watched Sienna’s reaction closely. "Julian has been managing the Vale European operations in Geneva for the last six years. When he heard about what Cross did to you at Logan Airport, he caught the first flight to Boston."

Sienna looked down at Lila, her heart skipping a beat. "Show him in, Mary."

A minute later, tall, broad-shouldered steps echoed across the granite terrace.

Julian Vance stood before her. He was thirty-five, with dark hair silvered at the temples, sharp blue eyes, and wearing a simple tailored navy coat. He looked completely unlike Damon—there was no performative flash, no arrogance, only a deep, quiet strength that filled the air.

He stopped ten feet away, his eyes moving over Sienna, taking in her healthy glow, before resting on the baby sleeping in her arms.

"Hello, Sienna," Julian spoke, his voice rough with suppressed emotion.

"Julian," Sienna whispered, standing up slowly. "What are you doing here?"

"I came home," Julian said softly, taking a step closer. "The second Arthur told me what happened... I couldn't stay in Switzerland another minute."
