Chapter 7 - The Final Sentence

The police sirens grew louder, their red and blue lights flashing through the pine trees along the estate driveway.
Two cruisers pulled up behind Damon’s battered rental car. Four state troopers stepped out with weapons drawn, quickly surrounding the disheveled former CEO.
"Damon Cross!" the lead trooper shouted. "Keep your hands where we can see them! Step away from the residents!"
Damon didn't fight them. As the troopers forced him to his knees on the cold gravel and snapped heavy handcuffs over his wrists, he kept his eyes fixed on Sienna.
"You did this to me!" Damon screamed as he was pulled up to his feet. "You dragged me into the dirt!"
Sienna walked slowly toward the police cruiser, stopping just inches from him.
"You dragged yourself into the dirt the moment you walked past those airport doors, Damon," Sienna said, her voice completely even. "You thought taking Lila’s suitcase was a display of power. You thought leaving me with twelve percent battery was a strategic move. All it did was show me exactly who you were."
The trooper opened the rear door of the cruiser. "Mr. Cross, you are under arrest for felony violation of a protective order, criminal trespassing, and DUI."
As the cruiser door slammed shut and the police cars drove down the driveway, the silence of the Maine coast returned, heavy and peaceful.
Sienna stood on the gravel, watching the red tail lights vanish beyond the iron gates. She took a deep, full breath of the cold ocean air, feeling the final lingering weight of her six-year nightmare lift from her shoulders forever.
Julian stepped up beside her, gently draping his coat over her shoulders. "Are you okay, Sienna?"
Sienna turned to look at him, her dark eyes clear and sparkling in the afternoon light. "I've never been better in my life, Julian."
Over the next three months, the legal storm around Damon Cross reached its inevitable, absolute conclusion.
Extensive forensic audits revealed that Damon had not only turned a blind eye to Vivienne Hart's embezzlement, but he had actively engaged in tax fraud, falsifying Cross Meridian's shipping manifests to evade federal customs duties.
In a federal courtroom in Boston, Damon Cross pleaded guilty to three counts of corporate fraud and tax evasion. He was sentenced to eight years in a federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania, his remaining assets liquidated to pay back-taxes, leaving him completely destitute.
Vivienne Hart accepted a plea deal, receiving four years in state custody and returning the 2.4 million dollars stolen from the Vale Trust.
On the day the final divorce decree was signed, Sienna sat in Arthur Pendelton's corner office overlooking Boston Harbor.
Arthur slid the final gold-sealed document across the mahogany desk.
"It's official, Miss Vale," Arthur said with a warm, triumphant smile. "The court has restored your maiden name, terminated all of Damon's legal claims, and granted you absolute, unassailable control of the Harrison Vale Syndicate."
Sienna picked up the gold fountain pen, signing her name—Sienna Vale—with a firm, steady flourish.
"What are your plans for the syndicate, Sienna?" Arthur asked.
Sienna looked out the window at the harbor where massive container ships were gliding across the blue water.
"We are renaming the logistics division," Sienna announced. "It will no longer be Cross Meridian. From today, it is Lila Maritime & Aviation."
"A fine name," Arthur smiled warmly. "And the CEO position?"
"I've already appointed him," Sienna said.
Just then, the office door opened, and Julian Vance stepped into the room holding six-month-old Lila, who was giggling happily as Julian lifted her toward the sky.
"The board approved the new shipping routes for the Atlantic fleet, Sienna," Julian reported, stepping over to set Lila safely in Sienna’s arms. "We're completely operational."

Sienna looked up at Julian, seeing the deep love, loyalty, and strength in his eyes. "Thank you, Julian. For everything."
Julian leaned down, pressing a soft, warm kiss against Sienna's forehead, then kissing Lila's soft cheek. "I told you, Sienna. I'm never leaving again."
