Chapter 10 - The Sun Rises on the Sanctuary

The afternoon air was warm and heavy with the scent of blooming jasmine. The massive backyard lawn of the Vance Sanctuary was covered in soft, white picnic blankets, scattered with colorful wooden toys, and filled with the joyful, bubbling laughter of friends and family.
It was the twins' first birthday.
Claire stood near a beautifully decorated table holding a double birthday cake—one topped with a little blue sailboat for Leo, and the other with a gold butterfly for Maya. Claire looked stunning, her skin radiant, wearing a simple cream-colored linen dress that floated around her ankles. She looked completely at peace, the lines of exhaustion and fear that had once defined her face entirely gone.
Arthur Vance sat in a lawn chair, happily chatting with the estate's staff, whom Claire had retained and given significant raises. Near the edge of the grass, Caleb was sitting on his knees, laughing as tiny Leo crawled aggressively toward his shoes, while Maya sat in Caleb’s lap, happily pulled at his silk tie.
Watching Caleb play with her children, Claire felt a profound, golden warmth settle into her chest. He hadn't just helped her win her freedom; he had shown her what real protection, real kindness, and real love looked like. Over the past few months, their professional bond had naturally, beautifully matured into something deep, steady, and unbreakable.
Caleb looked up, catching Claire's gaze. He smiled, gently picking up Maya and taking Leo's hand as he walked over to the cake table.
"They're ready for their candles, Mom," Caleb said, his eyes filled with a quiet devotion that made Claire’s heart skip a beat.
"Make a wish, Claire," Arthur called out from his chair, raising his glass.
Claire looked down at her beautiful, healthy twins, then up at Caleb, who reached out to gently squeeze her hand. She thought back to the night she had been left alone on a bleeding rug, abandoned by a man who thought wealth was something you could steal from others. She had survived the dark, fought through the storm, and protected her children with nothing but her own quiet brilliance.

She didn't need to make a wish. Everything she had ever wanted—true family, absolute freedom, and a love built on an iron foundation of respect—was already standing right in front of her.
As Claire blew out the candles alongside her children, the sound of clapping and joyous laughter echoed across the sanctuary, carrying her past the shadows of the past and straight into a bright, limitless future.
