Chapter 3 - The Dawn of Reckoning

The sun rose over the city in a brilliant shock of amber and grey, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate. Inside the master bedroom, Liam groaned, throwing an arm over his eyes as the harsh morning light pierced through the heavy silk curtains. He smelled of Victoria’s perfume and expensive cigars from the night before.
Downstairs, Susan was already in the kitchen, demanding that the house staff prepare an elaborate breakfast celebration. "And make sure the silver is polished!" she shrieked at the maid. "Miss Victoria will be down shortly, and I want everything immaculate!"
Suddenly, the tranquil morning silence was shattered by a deafening, metallic crash from the front gate.
Liam jumped out of bed, throwing on a silk robe as he ran to the window. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. The wrought-iron security gates of the estate had been forced open. Turning into the driveway were three marked police cruisers, their blue and red lights flashing silently against the morning mist. Behind them rolled two large, unmarked black SUVs and a massive commercial moving truck.
"What the hell?" Liam muttered, rubbing his eyes in disbelief.
He ran down the grand staircase, his silk robe billowing behind him. In the foyer, Susan stood frozen, her face completely pale as the heavy oak front door was violently pushed open.
Four armed police officers stepped into the foyer, followed by a tall, imposing man in a tailored grey suit. It was Arthur Vance. And standing right beside him, dressed in a sleek, tailored trench coat, looking completely calm and utterly radiant, was Claire. She held a double stroller tightly in her hands, with tiny Maya and Leo resting peacefully inside.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Susan shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a trembling finger at Claire. "Claire! How dare you bring the police into my home! And why are you holding my grandson? Liam, call security! Get this garbage out of our house!"
Liam descended the last few steps, trying to summon his usual arrogant posture. "Claire, have you lost your mind? You're trespassing on private property. This house belongs to Victoria now. Officers, arrest this woman! She’s trying to kidnap my son!"

The lead police officer stepped forward, pulling a heavy leather folder from his jacket. He didn't look at Liam; he looked straight at Susan.
"Mr. Sterling, Ms. Sterling, we are not here to arrest Claire," the officer announced, his voice booming through the vaulted foyer. "We are here to execute a lawful eviction and asset seizure warrant. This property does not belong to a Victoria Chen. This property belongs solely and entirely to Claire Vance-Sterling."
