Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Unleashed

The hum of activity outside the mansion was chaotic. Moving men in gray uniforms began hauling out heavy, ornate furniture—pieces that Susan had bought using Liam’s credit lines, all of which were now frozen under Claire's legal petitions.
Liam sat on the curb of the driveway, his head in his hands, still wearing nothing but his silk robe. Victoria was being loaded into the back of an unmarked federal vehicle, her hands securely cuffed behind her back as investigators searched her designer luggage for fraudulent bank tokens.
Claire stood on the grand wrap-around porch, cradling Maya in her arms while Arthur Vance monitored the police sorting through the files in Liam’s home office.
"You played this beautifully, Claire," Arthur said, handing her a warm cup of coffee. "Your grandfather would be proud. He always said your silence shouldn't be mistaken for compliance."
"I gave Liam every opportunity to be a husband, Arthur," Claire said softly, watching her daughter's tiny fingers twitch in her sleep. "When I was in labor, doubled over on that rug, he walked over my pain to pour wine for another woman. He wanted to split my children up because his mistress didn't want a daughter. He didn't just break our marriage vows; he abandoned his humanity."
Caleb, Arthur’s junior associate—a brilliant, sharp-eyed attorney who had spent the last forty-eight hours compiling Liam’s hidden debt records—stepped onto the porch.

"Claire, we just finished auditing Liam’s personal accounts," Caleb reported, holding a tablet. "It’s worse than we thought. He didn't just lose the family business to bad investments; he’s been embezzling from the Sterling employee pension fund to keep up appearances for his mother and Victoria. The moment the divorce papers are filed in family court, the criminal prosecutor will slap him with grand larceny charges."
Claire didn't look back at Liam as he wept on the curb. "File them immediately, Caleb. He wanted to show me what it felt like to be a helpless single mother with nothing. Let's see how he handles being a convicted felon with no one."
