Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the Righteous

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Thomas said, her voice dropping to a freezing, absolute pitch that made the entire courtroom hold its breath. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such a callous, arrogant display of patriarchal entitlement and basic human cruelty."

Liam swallowed hard, his skin turning a sickly shade of grey.

"You attempted to treat human infants—your own children—like commercial commodities, dividing them based on the financial preferences of a mistress who is currently awaiting federal prison," the judge continued, her gavel resting in her hand like a weapon of execution. "You abandoned your wife while she was bleeding on your floor, left her to deliver your children alone, and then had the audacity to enter a medical facility to humiliate her."

"Your Honor, I was under immense financial stress—" Liam attempted to plead, his voice cracking.

"Silence!" Judge Thomas barked. "The court hereby grants Claire Vance-Sterling sole, exclusive physical and legal custody of Leo and Maya Sterling. Furthermore, all parental rights belonging to Liam Sterling are hereby permanently and irrevocably terminated. You have no right to see them, no right to call them, and your name will be stripped from their birth certificates upon the plaintiff's request."

Susan, who was sitting in the gallery, let out a loud, dramatic wail, burying her face in her hands. "My grandson! You're stealing our bloodline!"

"Additionally," the judge noted, looking at Arthur Vance. "The defendant is ordered to pay maximum child support adjustments, which will be seized directly from any remaining liquidated corporate shares he possesses before his criminal trial begins. This court is adjourned."

As the judge slammed her gavel, Claire closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath she felt like she had been holding for years. She felt Caleb’s hand gently rest on her shoulder, offering a steady, reassuring warmth.

"You're free, Claire," Caleb whispered. "He can never touch you or the babies again."

Claire opened her eyes, looking over at Liam, who was currently being approached by two state troopers waiting at the back of the courtroom. The handcuffs clicked into place before he could even leave the defense table. His family court battle was over, and his criminal nightmare was just beginning.
