Chapter 2 - The Illusory Kingdom

The grand library of the Sterling mansion smelled of old leather, expensive wax, and stale bourbon. A roaring fire crackled in the massive limestone hearth, casting flickering amber shadows across the floorboards. Susan Sterling sat on the velvet chaise lounge, her face flushed with alcohol and unbridled triumph.

"To the new matriarch of the Sterling estate!" Susan cheered, raising her crystal flute of champagne toward Victoria, who was lounging gracefully in Liam’s favorite leather armchair.

Victoria flashed a dazzling smile, her manicured fingers twirling the heavy, diamond-encrusted Sterling family heirloom ring on her left hand. "Oh, Susan, please. It was nothing. When Liam told me the bank was hours away from seizing this beautiful home, I simply couldn't stand by. A family of your stature deserves to live in luxury, not out on the streets like commoners."

Liam entered the library, holding a freshly opened bottle of imported wine. He walked straight to Victoria, leaning down to press a kiss to her cheek. "The papers have been delivered. Claire didn't even fight it. She just sat there like the broken, useless wallflower she's always been. By tomorrow, Leo will be here, and we can finally purge her memory from this house."

"Did she sign them?" Susan asked eagerly, leaning forward. "Did the miserable girl give up the boy?"

"She will," Liam said confidently, pouring himself a glass of wine. "She has no choice. She doesn't have a dime to her name, and her parents left her nothing but a pile of old books. She knows she can't afford a lawyer to fight a custody battle against Victoria’s family fortune."

Victoria giggled, taking a sip from her glass. "It really is tragic, isn't it? But don't worry, Liam darling. I’ve already contacted the interior designers. We are going to completely gut the nursery Claire set up. All those cheap, pastel colors are so tacky. We’ll replace them with imported Italian marble and custom silk drapery for little Leo."

"You're an angel, Victoria," Susan gushed, her eyes glittering with greed. "I always knew Liam deserved someone of your caliber. Not some charity case who couldn't even keep the floor clean while she was pregnant."

As the three of them laughed, clinking their glasses together in celebration of their stolen future, they were entirely oblivious to the dark sedan parked at the edge of the estate's long, winding driveway. Inside the vehicle, an investigator from Arthur Vance's legal team adjusted a high-powered camera lens, capturing crystal-clear photographs of the three fraudsters through the grand library windows. The countdown had begun, and the walls of their illusory kingdom were already beginning to crack.
