Chapter 4 - The Escalation

Over the next fourteen days, the trap closed with surgical precision.

Through the encrypted feed from Clara’s phone, my legal team gathered over forty hours of undeniable, horrific evidence. We captured Evelyn Vance striking Clara with the wooden rod, audio of Marcus explicitly detailing how they would liquidate my agency’s reserves to pay off their bank debts, and recordings of Arthur Vance senior discussing how they had bribed a local building inspector to ignore safety violations on one of their foreclosed properties.

Meanwhile, Arthur Mercer and I executed a masterclass in corporate illusion.

We drafted a 120-page "Management Integration and Asset Transfer Agreement." On the surface, it appeared to grant Marcus Vance full executive control over my agency’s primary operating accounts upon our marriage.

In reality, hidden within the complex corporate cross-collateralization clauses on page 84, the agreement executed a reverse-liability swap. The moment Marcus signed the document, he wasn't taking over my agency’s liquid reserves—he was personally guaranteeing all of my agency’s future corporate debts while transferring his existing personal liabilities into a newly formed subsidiary that I completely controlled.

On Wednesday afternoon, six days before the wedding, Marcus brought his family’s corporate attorney to my downtown office to sign the preliminary merger documents.

Marcus signed every page with a flourish of his Montblanc pen, practically shaking with excitement.

“It’s done,” Marcus smiled, sliding the signed master document back across the desk to Arthur Mercer. “As of next Saturday, Vance Enterprises and Danielle Media are officially unified.”

“Indeed they are, Mr. Vance,” Arthur Mercer said smoothly, taking the signed documents and stamping them with a red notary seal. “Congratulations.”

As soon as Marcus and his attorney left the office, Arthur locked the door.

“He didn't even read the addendum,” Arthur chuckled softly, shaking his head. “He was so blinded by greed he just signed away his remaining legal protections.”

“What’s the status of the federal criminal filing?” I asked, leaning against my desk.

“The District Attorney’s office and the FBI Financial Crimes Division have reviewed the audio and video files from Clara’s device,” Arthur reported, pulling out an official document with a federal seal. “They’ve issued sealed arrest warrants for Marcus, Evelyn, and Arthur Vance senior on charges of grand larceny, bank fraud, wire fraud, felony extortion, and human trafficking.”

I looked out my office window at the skyline of Chicago. “When will the warrants be executed?”

Arthur smiled a dark, brilliant smile. “The DA agreed to your request, Danielle. The marshals will move in at 4:00 PM on Saturday.”

“Right in the middle of our wedding reception,” I murmured softly.
