Chapter 7 - The Collapse

Chaos erupted in the ballroom.
Guests scrambled back, pulling out their phones to record the unbelievable scene as federal agents swarmed the main stage.
Marcus tried to bolt toward the side exit, but two marshals tackled him directly onto the wooden dance floor, slamming his face against the polished oak. Steel handcuffs clicked loudly around his wrists, locking behind his back.
“Get off me!” Marcus screamed, thrashing wildly in his wedding tuxedo. “Danielle! Tell them to stop! You’re my wife! You can’t do this to me!”
I walked slowly to the edge of the stage, looking down at him from above.
“You’re right, Marcus,” I said smoothly, my voice carrying over the microphone. “I am your wife. Which means under Illinois marital property laws, I have full legal standing to grant federal agents access to every shared drive, bank account, and safe-deposit box registered in your name.”
“You crazy bitch!” Arthur Vance senior roared, trying to push past an agent, but he was immediately forced against a table and handcuffed alongside his wife, Evelyn, who was weeping frantically as her emerald dress was rumpled against the floor.
“Danielle, please!” Evelyn sobbed, her regal composure completely destroyed. “We’re family! We took you into our home!”
“You took me into your home to fleece my company and turn me into your next domestic servant,” I said, stepping down from the stage. “Just like you did to Clara.”
At that exact moment, the side doors opened.
Clara walked into the ballroom, accompanied by Arthur Mercer and a female police detective. She was wearing a clean, elegant cream coat. Though her face still bore faint traces of healing bruises, her head was held high, her eyes shining with absolute, triumphant dignity.
When Evelyn saw Clara, she let out a choked gasp. “Clara...?”
Clara walked right up to Evelyn and Marcus, looking down at her abusers without a single trace of fear left in her body.
“The police found the ledgers in the basement wall, Evelyn,” Clara said, her voice steady and clear. “Every stolen check, every forged signature, every document you forced me to sign. It’s all over.”
Marcus looked between me and Clara, his eyes wild with terror as the full weight of his ruin finally hit his brain. He wasn't getting my company. He wasn't getting twelve million dollars. He was going to federal prison for a very, very long time.
“Take them away,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenkins commanded.

The marshals dragged Marcus, Evelyn, and Arthur senior out through the center aisle of the ballroom, past two hundred stunned society guests whose phones were recording every second of their public humiliation.
By 5:00 PM, the video of Marcus Vance being dragged out of his own wedding in handcuffs was the number-one trending story on social media across the United States.
