Chapter 6 - The Reception Execution

At 4:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the country club was filled with light, laughter, champagne toasts, and the smooth sounds of a live jazz orchestra.
Marcus and I stood on the raised main stage. Evelyn was holding court near the three-tiered wedding cake, boasting to a group of socialites about how her family’s business empire was expanding into media production.
Marcus raised a crystal glass, tapping a spoon against it to command the room’s attention.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Marcus announced, his voice booming proudly through the microphone. “Thank you all for joining us on this glorious day. Today isn't just a celebration of love—it’s a celebration of legacy. As many of you know, my brilliant wife Danielle and I have officially unified our corporate assets today!”
The crowd clapped enthusiastically. Evelyn raised her glass from the front table, beaming with victory.
“Danielle has decided to step down as CEO of Danielle Media,” Marcus continued, placing a heavy, possessive arm around my waist. “And starting Monday, Vance Enterprises will assume full management over her firm’s multi-million dollar portfolios!”
I reached out and gently pulled the microphone from Marcus’s hand.
“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, stepping forward toward the edge of the stage. My voice was calm, clear, and projected effortlessly across the room. “That was a lovely speech. But before we drink to that, I have a small wedding gift I’d like to share with everyone.”
Marcus looked at me, his smile faltering slightly. “Danielle? What are you doing?”
I signaled to the AV booth at the back of the ballroom.
The grand crystal chandeliers dimmed. The massive presentation screen behind the stage flickered to life.
Instead of a romantic slideshow of our relationship, a high-definition video began playing.
It was the night vision recording from the storage shed in Highland Park.
The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, dead silence.
On the twenty-foot screen, Evelyn Vance’s face was crystal clear, holding the wooden rod over Clara. The high-fidelity audio echoed through the ballroom speakers:
“Once Danielle signs the management merger, her firm's liquid assets will belong to this family. Then she’ll learn her place, exactly like you did.”
And then came Marcus’s voice, clear as a bell:
“Danielle trusts me completely. As soon as we say 'I do,' I'll take total control of her corporate accounts.”
Gasps of horror shattered the room. Several women shrieked. Guests dropped their glasses, champagne shattering across the hardwood floor.
Evelyn Vance turned deathly pale, dropping her wine glass as she stared at the screen in absolute horror. “Turn it off! TURN IT OFF RIGHT NOW!”
Marcus’s face drained of every drop of color. He lunged toward me, trying to grab the microphone. “Danielle! What the hell is this?! What did you do?!”
I stepped back smoothly, my heel clicking sharply against the stage floor.
Before Marcus could touch me, the double doors of the grand ballroom were slammed open.

Twelve heavily armed Federal Marshals and officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department poured into the room, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins.
“Marcus Vance! Arthur Vance! Evelyn Vance!” Agent Jenkins’s voice boomed across the ballroom. “Stay where you are! You are all under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and felony domestic abuse!”
